There, I've said it. Is this wrong...?

Well... I must say, before the musical police turn up, they were superb. I'm putting the 50,000 flashing wristbands experience up there with my experience of listening to Pink Floyd whilst watching a flashing smoke detector on an oil platform...

Fair play they were good value.. Cant say I enjoyed the support acts Robyn and Ritaora. I assume they were rubbish to make Chris and the lads seem better...

Also worth noting is the 'helter skelter' access to the stands in the Etihad... Far more efficient than conventional stairwells....

Seriously not true though is it! Super Furry animals, manics, feeder, radiohead, and fair few more had plenty of chart success. So what is mainstream!?

As for Coldplay, each to their own but they continue to rip off bands like Radiohead and kraftwerk and more and get payed well for it. No doubt they put on a good show but not my cup of tea. If they played in the parc though I'd applaud us for getting a band in that will sell the place.

It's notable how the only 2 people who have taken up OaM's post are you and KID A.

Oh and for what it's worth how can they be ripping off people they openly admit were influential on them like Travis and Kraftwerk.

To me they are just an alternate rock 4 piece sound as were the likes of U2 in the early days, or even Oasis.

I love how you all jump to your defences of not being music police LOL

Bryn, you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.. LOL

Seriously though, Coldplay. One good song, that one with the bell going through the chorus, I forget its name.

They are up there with Razorlight, awful middle of the road indie band with an idiot front man.

Their blue room ep was class. Unfortunately they realised they could make more money appealing to wider audience with more watered down music.

There is a huge difference in being influenced by those artists, but melodies are rip offs. Everyone has influences, just poor to rip off their melodies. That's just my opinion anyway.

One thing we can all agree on though, of everyone had the same taste in music it would be a bland world. It's not our fault that we like things that real radio play the death out of.

I know you're thinking Queen.

Every band that spans a decade or more does that though surely...early sound gathers following, one or two songs become the point of reference for the band, band get tired of playing that sound, diversify, popularity wanes , so they return to the original sound (without admitting it of course).
Can't think of many exceptions TBH.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of bands that keep their sound wil. The difference is, you've started talking about popularity. Some bands don't change just to be more popular. Coldplay did. Which was a shame.

OK. But again Martin asked Kraftwerk if he could use one of their riffs for Yellow. I think the shytefest that went on about them 'stealing' Satriani's riff(s) has just stuck with them. Quite un-fair.

I think they are 4 pretty gifted musicians who worked hard at their trade. I admit to some rose tinted vision of them on the basis they came through the 70's conventional route of years of hard playing on the circuit before cracking it...

I'm trying to think of bands that have changed, it's quite hard actually. I can only get as far as Green Day and Feeder.

i used to like the killers. (still like the first album and the lyrics for mr brightside i think are outstanding about paranoia) first record, i really liked, then they released mr brightside about 5 different times which really bugged me.

the second album was ok ish and then their last album was pretty poor imo, the rift between the band members seemed to have affected the music. human is the only song i can tolerate on that album.

If you like the killers, its well worth checking out Gaslight Anthem. think a less polished killers. only a matter of time before they have serious success imo. Gaslight Anthem new album Handwritten is out next month.  springsteenesque rock.

I did the Reading fest for about 17 years on the bounce, saw incredible sets by New Order/Metallica/Sisters Of Mercy/Super Furries/PIL/Senser and many more, The Pixies at Reading still the best band i've seen:)
Nirvana in '92 were rubbish though, in '91 they were amazing.

I dont give a stuff mate, enjoy life and do whatever makes you happy. As for music if i like it i will listen to it, if i dont i wont, easy really
When i was younger it was part of listening to what was the shakers and movers and i missed loads of superb music and groups by being so bloody boring. My range now is everything and if it helps me to produce 10 mins of complete drum lunacy on my kit, happy days.
My 12 year old is into metal, and really into it, he says come and listen to this and that and bloody hell its heavy stuff, but he loves it so good for him., just do your own thing.....and dont give a stuff cos in the big picture it dont mean a thing..

KidA,

Hundreds and thouasands of bands who have been around in the higher echelons of the industry for more than a decade that have kept the same sound all through on new material?

Sorry need convincing, please give examples to enhance debate.

Elliott smith kept his sound from beginning of his solo work all through to what became his last record.

Even though the music evolves and grows as the writer grows, with different influences coming in all the time, the roots of some bands disappear the more popular they get. Some stay true to the roots whilst also writing a different style to previous records. That's IMO is where Elliott smith falls into. First album raw, acoustic then Went on to have mastered piano, drums etc so they had parts in albums, but still the sound was always Elliott Smith. Their was still something there that you could identify with. Green Day have changed sort of but they are getting older. Even though the last album was not well received there are still elements of green day on it.

Coldplays current album, compared to the first, sound like 2 completely different bands. That's where they hae lost fans and that's where they have gained so many. They have gone a lot more pop/radio friendly. Their first record I enjoyed. Listening to them now, they are a million miles away from Te band they used to be. I used to enjoy offspring when I was younger but there's a band who have completely gone and forgotten themselves IMO.

Radiohead constantly change. Every album is different. But, there is something there still that's Radiohead. What that is I don't know. They push the creative boundaries all the time, maybe that's it I dont know. But for them to release an album like OK Computer which was deemed "commercial suicide" by the label who nearly refused to put the record out Radiohead insisted...what happened!? That record is with many critics if not top, it's close to be being the best record ever written, and the record that was full of "no popular songs will come from" Radiohead had their highest chart entries with tracks off that record reaching no.3 I think. So bands do keep their sound so to speak. Some lose it then go back to it like Duran Duran recently have! But others as well.

PE SA..

That's closer to the point I'm trying to get across...

I can differentiate and get my head around bands building an album around certain themes/tryign different producers etc...U2' Joshua tree is heavily embellished by gospel infuence, visits to Nicaragua, American culture etc... other albums like Zooropa took influence from European sounds and culture. Both very different sounds.

All I'm saying here is that ultimately any band of long standing is defined in the public domain by a certain 'sound' taken mostly from a composite of early work...in the end that's the money sound...very few bands continue down the road of diversity and influence that then reduces their income or likelyhood of recording contracts.

The Sweet did a couple of good albums without Connolly, still a great live band (Queen ripped that band off big time, listen to the multi tracked vocals on Sweet's early albums!). Springsteen is a world class live act, and he still donates to trade unions/strike funds (even gave to our miners during the big strike), absolute top man.
Coldplay still sit in the insipid pool of blandness thoughLOL

My daughter went to see Coldplay last week and really enjoyed it,one of those where i wasn,t interested as they are in my view ok, but now wish i had gone

Next week The Boss is in town and in the same predicament. Hear he does a great show but he aint one of my favourites... and it,s £60 a ticket !

Next live music for me is Slade and Sweet in December. Wife bought tickets and now realises that Noddy won,t be there and the lead singer of Sweet won,t be there unless Derek Acorah is present. Not my era obviously, but this is what you have to put up with, being married to an older woman Wink

Cheers Jase, as a music expert of the forum, i will take the fact that you approve of the Boss and Sweet as a compliment !
I'm still waiting for somebody to have a go at The Boss;)
