I'm welling up now, I try not to think about how much fun they would have had on that bus, that busdriver should be hunted and shot.

A lead singer riddled with AIDS, knowing that this would be the last video he'd ever be in, the rest not sure on the future of their friend and dreading the future.

A sign off to the millions of fans

to me it is one of the saddest songs/videos out there

Right. seriously, that's enough Queen on this thread. Just stop it. It's not sad, they were a comedy band!

So far Evans is closest imo. I'm really trying to have a good think before answering.

All I've got so far is Brand New - Limousine (MS Rebridge) which is written about a truly sad event:

Heroin?

Just a stab in the dark, so to speak.

Even if it's about how much Thom Yorke likes fluffy bunnies, it still sounds sad.

For personal reaons, Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Its a sad song anyway, but cant even listen to it anymore.

One thats worth a punt though, Eminem - Stan.

there are plenty out there though. Ataris have a song called My Reply which is about a fan writing to them thanking them for being her favorite band and was dying with an illness. Thats quite a sad song especially when he performed it live explaining the song. The song on the album does not reflect the sadness of the lyrics though.

"Listen to what you want" and "personal taste" have been used in other music topics in the past, obviously there should be an add-on of "as long as I like it as well otherwise it will get ridiculed", obviously a degree of 5th form attempts at non-conformity have abounded here over the years. At least i'm up front about being a music snob at times and have no qualms about people taking the urine about my long term love of The Quo:) I take Homer Simpson's outlook, "everyone is wrong except me", that's how I can enjoy looking down on Coldplay/Olly Murs/Boy Bands/Nick Cave/Adele (no discernible talent, popular becuase of what?)/Lady Gaga (awful!) etc etcWink

The background:
This song is about the death of 7-year old Katie Flynn. Hours before her death, Katie was the flower girl at her aunt's wedding, spreading petals down the aisle. As they left the wedding, they all got into a limousine and headed home. Martin Heidgen, 25, had had at least 14 drinks that night and his blood alcohol content (0.28) was more than three times the legal limit in New York (0.08). He drove more than two miles north in the southbound lane containing the Flynn family. Both the driver of the limousine, Stanley Rabinowitz, and Katie were killed instantly. Katie was decapitated and her mother held her head as rescue workers helped the rest of the family out of the vehicle.

The lyrics in this song draw many parallels to this tragedy. The first verse is seemingly from the mother's perspective, telling Katie to spread the petals and mentioning that she had one more night to be her mother. The second verse is arguably from Heidgen's perspective, referring to Katie as "My beauty supreme," and lamenting the guilt that crushes him. Four lines are sung towards the very end of the song and are nearly inaudible against the refrain. These lines seem to be from Katie's perspective and mention how she will never have to deal with loss herself, and therefore "should be the one laughing."

A cold couple of songs below, I think the whole "...Puppets" album reeks of death and cold actually.

I think this wins for me:

Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said

Quote And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to Father Time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD took you a little farther away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say good-bye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the T.V. entertained itself

Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes 'round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die

So who's gonna watch you die?

Maybe. Thing was that though is that not all sad sounding songs have sad content.

This is one of the most melancholic songs I've heard, but it's about being happily married:

I saw Green day there as well, I can't remember if they were headlining though, definitely around the time of their first album and prob headlined as yank bands usually did. Nofx supported by The Offspring was another tidy little bill they had! Memory stirring a bit now, also saw Fugazi/Snuff/Godflesh/Darling Buds/Cornershop/Lamb/Dag Nasty/Man Or Astroman/Lemonheads/Lagwagon, most of my visits were up until the mid-late 90's with only The Subhumans coming after the millenium, i'm pretty sure I saw the UK Subs there as well

Never found any Smiths song sad or depressing just sheer, utter brilliance. The one that really gets me, besides the utterly tragic Puff the Magic Dragon, is It Started With a Kiss by Hot Chocolate. Just the despair of loving someone who doesn't even remember you, gets me every time.

Lyrically, quite a sad song, is

The Gaslight Anthem - 59 Sound

I wonder which song they're going to play when we go
I hope it's something quiet, mannered, peaceful, and slow
When we float out into the ether into the everlasting arms
I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life

Because the chains I've been hearing now for most of my life
And the chains I've been hearing for most of my life

Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?

And I wonder were you scared when the metal hit the glass
See I was playing a show down the road when your spirit left your body
And they told me on the front lawn, I'm sorry I couldn't go
But I still know the song and the words and the name and the reasons

And I know because we were kids and we used to hang
And I know because we were kids and we used to hang

Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?

Young boys . . . young girls
Young boys . . . young girls
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday
Well they ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night

Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?

There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths
How Soon is Now - The Smiths. The longer album version rather than the single.
Everyday is Like Sunday - Morrissey (living in Morecambe at the time gave it added relevance).
Days of Pearly Spencer - David McWilliams (my preferred version but no real issue with Marc Almond's one).
Shadowplay - Joy Division

-------------
'Some players act hard. Delme just was. His presence could lift any side.'

It's about a Ford's car garage...in a place called Pearly Spencer...it's in Essex.

The light at the end of the tunnel-is the light of an oncoming train

What is this song about?

It's about homelessness or rather how McWilliams viewed the life of a homeless man in his home town.

Melissa Etheridge "It will be me".

In 1972, Roy Bergiers scored that try and said "that was for you lofty"

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us"

Eventhough the track is absolutely stunning, i guess some would call it sad!

Cody by Mogwai.

a fantastic track, i know the band is loved by a few on here already, but i recomend the band to all on the forum who have time just to listen to music that will be "new" to their ears.

A sign off to the millions of fans

to me it is one of the saddest songs/videos out there

While i appreciate the sentiments, that song was actually written by Roger Taylor and probably dosnt have much to do with dying of AIDS. it is however a great track and the video is very hard to watch. i would say Mother Love by Queen was  a sadder song
