Eddie Cochran? Bill Haley and the Comets? Bo Diddley? Little Richard?

Or someone more modern like Mick Jagger, Robert Plant or Bob Dylan?

Tough question! Very tough question.

Little Richard would be a good shout, but then  people like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, all worthy of the title also.

I think i will go for Jimi Hendrix though. He showed people exactly what to do with a guitar and get maximum volume and stunning sound without the complicated physics and electronics that Brian May used.

ask this question again tomorrow, and i will more than likely give a different answer, but today, it has to be Jimi Hendrix.

At least Eddie Cochrane (and Gene Vincent) wrote his own songs.......unlike Elvis. Life cut short, just like Buddy Holly.

I suppose Chuck Berry heavily influenced the Beatles and the Stones who themselves heavily influenced so many others.

Good question for which there cannot surely be a right answer!

He unified the titles with ease.

If we're arguing he can't be both, then I plump for Jonny Cash. Mainly because he had a combo of the licks and he was an utter bad-ass.

Did he have his testicles removed and replaced or did he, effectively, double up? 4 balls. Wow. Virile, man - didn't he also say he could impregnate a woman by just looking at her?

He did have a habit of making stuff-up and was usually drugged and / or boozed up, bless him.

The question is, of course, impossible to answer - especially as people have different ideas about what 'rock and roll' actually is.

I'd rule out C&W singers (Orbison, Cash) as that's a different style; likewise soul singers (James Brown etc.). Elvis ruled himself out when he went to Las Vegas and started wearing white jump-suits covered in sequins!

In order to attempt an answer, I'll provide a purely personal definition: music with a clear, powerful beat which is not over-complicated, and a clothes style which (for the most part anyway) is not downright embarrasing. There also needs to be a fairly large and consistent body of work.

Applying these criteria, I can't look beyond the Rolling Stones, whose great R&R songs include: Satisfaction, Brown sugar, Sympathy for the devil, Start me up, Honky tonk women, Jumping Jack Flash, Street fighting man etc. etc.

IMHO, Hendrix was, and remains, the greatest rock guitarist of all time - but he didn't live long enough to produce a long catalogue, and was becoming increasingly experimental (more jazz-inclined) towards the end.

Groups and individuals from 1970 onwards are different again - Led Zeppelin are brilliant, but is their music R&R? For me, it's gone a bit beyond that. Some punk could, maybe, be described as R&R, but categorisation is tricky.

So there you have it - and at least some of the Stones not only lived the R&R lifestyle, but actually managed to survive it - so far, anyway!

Hi - first post here. I think in order to answer that you first need to establish what is meant by Rock'n'Roll. Traditionally I see it as music of the 1950's but the term seems to have been pilferred by Heavy Metal fans etc.
If you are looking for the King - take a listen to Big Joe Turner - genius.

Very hard to choose.

It's always been USA and UK who produce the best music that's a fact.
You have Rolling Stones, Beatles, Queen, Oasis to name a few. While in America you had Elvis, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen ect...
The king of pop is MJ no doubt.
The king of Rock would have to be the king (Elvis).
The best showman has got to be Freddie Mercury (just watch Live Aid 85).
To end in my opinion the greatest rock artist has got to be Springsteen, the guys a machine. Aged 63 and playing for 3 to 4 hours while the youngsters last about 90 minutes.

I would say it's either Demis Roussos or Cronos from Venom.
I sometimes suspect these two may be the same person, just like Michael and LaToya Jackson were before they faked their own deaths and went to live on a pacific island with Lorc Lucan, Princess Diana and Robert Maxwell.
