Another query:

It used to be that players could not be used at all; then, injured players could be replaced; and now, tactical subs are allowed.

BUT under what circumstances can a player who has been subbed tactically return to the pitch? I know that for some time, if a front row forward gets hurt after coming on, then the original player can be dragged off the bench to put in a second shift. However, in Wales v Scotland, when flanker Cowan went off, Barclay was allowed back on again.

I guess this is legal, but if so when did the laws change? It was a new one on me.

If a sub gets injured, then he can be replaced by the original player (as long as the original player wasn't subbed due to an injury)

Was the Cowan/Barclay reversal due to it being a HIA?

OK, fair enough - any idea if this came in at the same time as the law on front rows returning to the fray, or was it later? It's not something I can remember seeing before.

Almost certainly - Cowan looked to be KO'd by Doc in a heavy tackle with clash of heads. Doc must have a super-hard noggin, as Matlock (? Aussie captain) found out to his cost a few years back!

By the way, I thought it was a nice touch when Doc went ovr to Cowan during the tunnel and shook hands with him. Respect.

If it's a non-bleeding injury to anywhere other than the head, then there can be no recall of an already subbed player. Only for a blood treatment or HIA, can an already subbed player be recalled. The exception being Front row forwards who can be recalled for any injury or else it is uncontested scrums.

Remember bloodgate- the Harlequins player couldn't pretend he had a hamstring injury to get Evans back on- only a blood capsule would do the necessary.

Thanks - I guess this is the definitive answer.

I had a feeling that it was not always possible to reverse a substitution.
