My wife and I are pretty normal and sane people.

How come, then, that we every so often scream "Kill the b@st@rd!" at our TV screen?

Is it over-excitement at a rugby match, or a boxing bout?

Not a bit of it.

We do like thrillers - preferably good ones - but do at times watch, shall I say, 'lower quality' fare. These are mainly responsible, because sooner or later something like this happens:

Someone (often, but not always, a woman) is being chased by a (potential) murderer... the reason varies (the pursuer may be a psychopath; or someone after an inheritance; or the 'pursued' may be a witness to a mob crime... none of that matters).

The pursued hides, grabs a weapon, and then when the criminal appears, clubs him (it's nearly always a man) over the head... then they run away again!

"Kill the b@st@rd", we scream! When the guy is down, finish him off - he'll only get up and chase you again, idiot!

Don't know if this utterly stupid plot convention annoys anyone else on here...!

Neveer considered it before, but I think from now on it is going to bug the hell out of me!

I can normally convince myself that the whole thing is fiction although last week I was fairly enthusiastic about a young farm labourer running a JCB lifting attachment through the evil  "Tom" in the S4C drama series "35 Diwrnod"
I find myself using the expression far more often when related to hypocritical politicians.

I have some sympathy there!

As far as drama is concerned, it is just crazy that a person would have someone who is trying to kill them at their mercy, and not then kill or incapacitate them (I suppose breaking their legs would do). It's jUST SO stupid that the story loses all credibility at that point.

Of course, when I have nothing better to do, I sometimes watch these programmes for a laugh - there is a special strand of afternoon 'thrillers' (supposedly) which invariably end up with a woman being chased by (usually) a psycho who also usually is a former boyfriend... I have named these 'screaming woman programmes', as that's what happens towards the end!

(A rather more realistic depiction of violence was given in a recent episode of 'Homeland', where the indestructible Quinn mashes the face of an evildoer, who recently murdered his (girl) friend. I rather like Quinn - portrayed by Rupert Friend, who'd be my nomination as the next James Bond - he looks as if he means it, whereas Tom Hiddleston does not look as if he could fight his way out of a paper bag!)
