not sure about anyone else, but registering to claim for tickets for the Nottingham fixture is something that has made me really look forward to the season ahead for many reasons. Dwayne at the helm - really looking forward to seeing not how only Dwayne progresses, but the other new additions to the coaching group and as well how Franks/Kelly may have developed.
As well as that, looking forward to seeing Scott Williams, Corey Baldwin and Tom Price back in a Scarlet shirt.
Apart from the obvious, Im not really convinced we will miss many players to Wales either which will help the side and the coaches settle even quicker. It is sad that it is looking likely that no Welsh international squad member in the Autumn will take part in the first batch of Welsh derby matches.
Something I read by Simon Thomas yesterday - but apparently not big enough for a story. a big failure of WRU yet again - but thats to be discussed on a different thread.
I am assuming we will do the norm of changing the team half time with some players having 15/20mins...In one way I hope we dont do that as I am a believer in forming partnerships...and that only comes with game time. I dont want the side to go into the first match of the season a little undercooked. It would be nice if we can have more than 2 friendly matches, but there we go.
I am assuming that the Welsh internationals will be in contention for the friendlies? i have done the following without the Welsh international players:
15. Tomi Lewis
14. Johnny Mcnicholl 13. Corey Baldwin 12. Scott Williams
11. Ryan Conbeer 10. Sam Costellow 9. Dane Blacker 8. Carwyn Tuipolotu 7. Josh Macleod (if hes back) 6. Aaron Shingler 5. Sam Lousi
4. Morgan Jones 3. WGJ 2. Marc Jones
1. Kemsley Mathias
2nd half: 15. Angus OBrien
14. Joe Roberts
13. Steff Hughes
12. Johnny Williams 11. Tyler Morgan
10. Rhys Patchell 9. Harri Williams
8. Sione Kalamafoni 7. Dan Davis 6. Blade Thomson 5. Tom Price 4. Lewis Rawlins 3. Samson Lee 2. Dom Booth 1. Rob Evans
Maybe feature other academy lads too...like centres Ed James and Iestyn Gwilliam.
who are people looking forward to seeing ? who do people see coming through to push the first teamers like Tom Rogers did last year ?

Pre-season excitement is alive & well I see PE SA . As for break out players this season I think we will see Tomi Lewis get his chance - real pace is just such a great commodity. Morgan Jones & Jac Price to establish themselves as first 23 locks; Steff Thomas & Kemsley Matthias to continue their development under Franks; the Llandeilo connection of Corey, Dan & Iestyn Rees to put current 23 incumbents under pressure. To select one is very difficult but if pushed I would go for Dan Davis - there is something about this lad that excites me. Of course all of them will need good luck with injuries.
We have two young new coaches - in Dwayne & Hagan so our attack & defence should look very different from last season. They will need time and patience from us but they are both very exciting appointments.

Front row is wide open for selection at this point. As is the centre position, in my opinion.
I’m just looking forward to a fresh start and hope that Dwayne will pick the team on merit, at least when it comes to meaningful games.

Yes Dan Davis is an odd one as a break through player having already featured in 30 games. But his recent injuries has hampered progress lately. The jersey is certainly there for him...6, 7 or 8 will be the debate here. He will be able to slot in well at either IMO .

i've said on another topic about Dan. i really think this is a big year for him and on the clips of the players training he seems to have bulked up a lot. A bit like josh macloed has done which has helped his game greatly. Dan has all the skills pace to be an excellent player, i think he may now have that power for pro rugby true (lets hope so).

There are quite a few young players who we hope will challenge for places in the 23 for big games this season... I don't suppose Tom Rogers qualifies as a potential 'breakthrough' player, as he's already been capped - but in reality, he's only played a handful of games for the Scarlets, and is still very young - so I'm looking forward to seeing him develop further. He looks top class.

I'd really like to see these 2 combinations in midfield:
Patchell, JBW, Eddie James Costellow, Scott, Roberts
Be great to see how the 2 youngsters go outside some experience.

Happy to see some Scarlets rugby!
A few points of interest in the team….Nicholas having a run at FB…Great to see Tom Phillips in there, it would be a story to see him take this chance….Baldwin on the wing and Roberts at 13 suggests that’s how the coaching team see things, at least for now…it’s not going to please a few, but as I’ve said before what I think Baldwin needs more than anything else is to start a few games on the bounce.
I’d expect to see a raft of changes for the Leicester game.

Some random thoughts: First half we really struggled for continuity, they looked more dangerous with the ball than we did at times. Nottingham came to play, they tackled and carried hard. Second half we really started to click, and as we got the better of them our confidence was awesome to watch, if a little too risky for a meaningful game!
Harry Williams - improved since the U20s displays. Decent pace, nothing much wrong with his service, if a little slow to get it out of the breakdown at times. Dan Davies - sorry, but he wasn't at the races. Slow, not competing at many breakdowns, looked a bit too bulky in the belly region Dinky -usual vanilla really. Costelow - what class. lovely timed passes and intelligent kicks, excellent pace and agility for a few breaks. At least one try saving tackle against one of their forwards 5m out too.
Caleb Salmon - Wow! For an 18 yr old debut, that was hugely impressive. A proper physical presence, carried hard, good hands, excellent work rate. If that wasn't an anomaly, we have a genuine prospect here. Like an instant replacement for Ed Kennedy really, but only 18.
Sione was as you'd expect. Very painful for those trying to stop him.
Steff Evs was like a man possessed. Either they were slow or he's gained a yard of pace too.
Young Archie is another great prospect. WGJ is a genetic freak. Absolute monster of a human being. Destroyed them at scrums after he came on.
Much bigger test on Thursday, I expect we'll see a lot of changes.
Concerns for the season start are lack of grunt at lock and lack of options at 7.
Last word: Why did we let Tom Phillips go? Played his heart out today.

Thanks for this. Great report.
All good apart from the concern at 7. Cubby not there yet. Macleod out til Xmas, Tomas on international duty, so this was Dan’s time.
Tom’s issue ( just my opinion) is that those sort of whole hearted performances result in a physical breakdown. No one can challenge the size of his heart though, and to that end I’d be delighted to see him fulfill his talent.
Caleb Salmon and Archer are really big bonuses in areas where we look a little lacking in depth.

It was noticeable that he was slow to get up after some tackles. He was usually up very quickly in our defensive line, and often caught their player behind their gain line, thus stifling their momentum. He did put in some crunching hits.
Tom played very well.

Don't actually agree with wasps view on Harry Williams. I thought he played at pace all through the game and his service was much quicker than or senior scrums halved and archive was very good when he came on but that was against a tiring defence. Salmon looks some talent, physical but also great handling skills and some great offloads.
Baldwin and conbeer were excellent too but steff evs looked like he had an edge to his game today, maybe he realises he has got a genuine challenge to his spot. Morgan Jones very good game and I really really hope we keep Tom Phillips on, bit of luck and he will do a job for us. Last point, just so good seeing shingler out there lads had a crap time injury wise and deserves some luck

Couple of things to work on this week in my opinion. we were a little weak in defending their driving maul I felt.
Secondly, not sure why, but there were 4 overthrows at lineout time which was disappointing. Calls, jumpers, lifters, thrower, not sure which of these were the problem, but it needs sorting.
Otherwise it was a good performance with some good handling skills shown by several players.

Baldwin and conbeer were excellent too but steff evs looked like he had an edge to his game today, maybe he realises he has got a genuine challenge to his spot. Morgan Jones very good game and I really really hope we keep Tom Phillips on, bit of luck and he will do a job for us. Last point, just so good seeing shingler out there lads had a crap time injury wise and deserves some luck |
I thought I was quite complementary lol.
Thought he was very good actually, didn't mean to dwell on the speed of getting the ball off the deck. He was certainly quicker than Cawdor.
As Will said, nice to have more depth at 9 and back row, given our Wales commitments and injuries.

Very good display for a 1st run-out of the season. Seen some comments on Social Media about Nottingham being semi-pros - we had a lot o young players out there today making their debuts, it's a bit of a leveller for me TBH. Some very nice touches and handling skills on display by both forwards and backs, with a clear intent to play some nice rugby.Bodes well for the season ahead. NB: It looked like Steff Evans has gained a yard of pace over the summer. Plus I thought Shingler had a nice cameo at the end. Huge season for him ahead after his injury.

Caleb needs to be careful at this stage in his career, before he has fully bulked up. He puts absolutely everything into his carrying - something that we have really needed, but maybe he needs to put more power and bulk on before he starts picking up injuries in collisions. Perhaps at the moment we should consider him more as an emerging 8 than as a ready second row. We certainly turned it on in the second half when Costelow, Shingler Steff Evans, Caleb and Archie came on and could do little wrong. It finally turned into an exhibition match with some beautiful tries.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and commentary. Really pleased for Tom - as has already been mentioned his total commitment to the cause and his selfless physical displays have delivered many injuries. Also the way he took the fact of being released is a lesson to all. His passion for the Scarlets remains undiminished.
Good he hear that Steff Evans is looking back to his old self again - I am afraid last season's attacking ideas didn't make the most of his undoubted skills. Archie & Caleb have appeared from the academy & clearly have huge potential. Harri & Archie will be eyeing a spot in the 23 when Hardy & Cawdor are away with Wales. I am sure Dwayne & his coaching team will have learnt a huge amount to work on this week as they leave for a sunny North Wales in preparation for Leicester on Thursday.
I expect many changes for Thursday as our array of Internationals start to appear - my biggest concern, already mentioned, is the 7 shirt. It seems Dan didn't go too well yesterday & all the other contenders are injured or unavailable. Dan's fellow Llandeilo colleague Iestyn Rees may be given the shirt at some stage.

There are clips of some of the tries on the latest piece Scarlets put on Twitter with Dwayne talking about the game.

Thank you to everyone for the updates and then the analysis. As someone who isn’t local and therefore couldn’t make it to the game, following this thread has made it feel like I was there yesterday! Looking forward to the start of the season now and hoping that some of the academy prospects that had good games yesterday are able to become breakthrough players.

Scrum half is going to be an interesting position to choose the starting player this season. Compounded by the fact your head coach being one of the all time great number 9s.

If I was Gareth D I might now be thinking of a career move to make a change / refresher to life eg to English Premiership at least. He has stagnated form wise but of course, Covid has confused things as well over the last 18 months.

My sincere apologies for that, it was a genuine error. Predictive text, and there was so much happening at that point in the match.

It was sheer opportunism on my part.

Quite so. We've all been there with predictive text and it set off some quick-witted responses. The humour "level" has dropped on here so anything to raise it a bit is welcome. I didn't see your posts during the game but I enjoyed them afterwards. Thank you.

Was excellent today, did all the dirty work to let the flair players play. Just what we need. Hopefully dwayne can keep him on if he's fit |
And yet we have some players in the squad endlessly injured yet there is no thought about them being released. Tom isnt the most injury prone player we have I would wager.

intrigued by Dwayne's comments re selection for Tigers, think we will integrating a few more of our welsh internationals. I see Corey Baldwin hasn't travelled to north Wales, so maybe we are ringing the changes.

If the game against Leicester is our final friendly before we meet Edinburgh, then if we are serious about the new competition we must play our proposed starting fifteen and subs against the Tigers. We rarely start the season with a bang and are then playing catch-up at the end of the campaign. I see no reason for our Welsh internationals not to play and even some of our Lions who hardly featured much in SA.

i thought it was a standard friendly. was always going to be rusty at the start.
impressed by Hari Williams, Archie Hughes, Caleb Salmon. they were hungry to make an impression and they certainly did.
I was a bit sceptical when I saw Ioan Nicholas named at 15 but he went pretty well there i thought. He may be better suited there than centre/wing - and with Halfpenny out all season, Liam Williams not playing this side of Christmas, we need options there especially with Tom Rogers now on the Wales radar.
I thought Corey Baldwin was hungry and aggressive which was good to see. Conbeer showed his pace which is always a delight to see - but what about that Kalamafoni / Harri Williams / Conbeer combo. What a lovely try that was.
Dan Jones seemed aggressive in defence, Costellow showed great vision especially with the kick across with steff scoring in the corner.
Steff Evs looked sharp when he came on, Dan Davis i thought was very good as well.
It was great to see the impact of Archie Hughes. scored some lovely tries and a lovely assist.

6 starts in 6 years reflects an awful run of injuries though.
That's why I'd be delighted to see him play regularly for us, he must have been through a stack of rehab in that time fair play.

I posted a bit tongue in cheek to be honest. On your point about our internationals not having returned from their breaks I'd be interested to know who pays their wages whilst away from the club recuperating, the Lions, the WRU or little us.
I naively thought with less games this season we might be able to field our best fifteen once or twice, I'm probably hugely over optimistic.
