Don’t think we need prop and back row, wing yes most definitely if he 6 foot 6 is 22 stone and runs the 100 metres in 10 seconds.

Not sure I'd be so bold as to say 'sign them up' without seeing them play a game of rugby But it's a great idea to have them in on trial and, if the coaches see some potential in one or two, then fantastic!

sure if the players are training with us then they must be of a good standard. we may be slightly short at tight head if samson isnt fit. back row, not sure if we need but i trust in dwayne. lets hope the winger is massive and quick....just what we need. fingers crossed. whenever i think of fijian army rugby players i think of the bath winger who ended up playing for england (cant remember his name). not saying these players are going to be internationals but its great we are looking out of the box at players and we may have a couple of gems there.

I played a fair bit of Rugby in the Army and the standard of the Fijians is top notch especially if you get them playing in positions next to each other they seem to have a understanding of what they will be doing far superior to any Welshman I’ve ever seen.
Every single Fijian I ever played with had naturally good hands and are immensely physical.
I’ve often thought it was strange that not too many of the Army lads play at the pro level as if you are any good at Rugby in the Army then the only uniform you will ever wear is a rugby shirt.

You can sign a contract with a club, but the army have first call in time of conflict. A Royal Marines Commando officer has just signed for the Cornish Pirates on the basis.

If any player in the Army gets a pro contract they will have to do about a week every year in uniform
I was a bang average player when I served but still managed to spend most of my time playing rugby
Trust me my battalion had a Guinness premiership player and we only ever saw him when he was “checking in” he didn’t even play for our Regiment when he signed a pro contract

We need to be careful that these players who will probably not be immediate candidates for the selected playing squad are given game time with our feeder clubs so that they don't just languish on the training field for long periods.

Wyn would count as a recruit out of university rugby and we've had quite a few players who've completed a Swansea uni degree whilst coming through our academy. Shenton was on the shortlist for University rugby player of the year along side Jenkins of Exeter ( previously mentioned on this forum). He was also apparently in the academy of our nearest neighbours who seem to have preferred a boy from Brynamman. Griff Evans seems to be a Narberth boy? I think we've known about him for a while.

Having witnessed first hand the scarlets scouting for eligible talent and work also done with the welsh exile programme I can vouch for the commitment and mileage they put in and the support they give to the families. I think with the finances the way they are the days of spending fortunes on overseas players in all home nations teams are going to slow down and academies/scouting will become a valuable commodity

I'm really happy with these signings, we've heard all about the player pathway etc but unless talent is being produced at semi-pro and below and then actually being signed by the regions it's all a bit pointless. If you're in the Llandovery age grades currently, there's proof in the next dressing room that you could get signed by the Scarlets, even past 20 years old. Best motivator out there. I imagine they will feed in gradually, and potentially become regulars by the end of the season if they hit the levels expected. Iirc, Beirne hardly saw a game for several months after we signed him then became undroppable. Overall, surely it's more sustainable to sign welsh youngsters over scouring the globe for foreign players?

Also, who do these youngsters learn from? Ask Justin Tipuric how much he learnt from Marty Holah. Yes, having a strong academy system is the first priority but we’d be fools to think we can rely solely on that for success. Strong external recruitment is vital.

It is and in ideal world all our players would be local. Not sure that will ever be in the case in the modern game though

Why wouldn’t it be ideal? Why wouldn’t you a home griqn team if the players were good enough? Seems odd you would have to even ask why tbh

If you want to be successful you have to spend a lot of money regardless of where they are from. For example, the majority of Leinster's players are home grown yet they spend more money than most French clubs. That's a cast iron fact. Also, while I agree having a strong academy and a regular stream of home grown players is absolutely vital I wouldn't want a side who are solely home grown. It's far too insular. You want some players coming in from other environments who bring new ideas etc, and who can impart their experience on home grown players.

Do you want to be a feeder club for Wales or do you want the Scarlets to be successful in their own right?
