Piece in WOL with Dwayne saying contract negotiations are underway and some high profile players will be leaving and ultimately replaced with current youngsters and not from outside. Although some outside recruitment is needed. Dwayne only mentions Kal as a high profile player who’s leaving. Any other names being banded around?
------------- Only one team plays in red. (Sorry, Scarlet)

If those high profile players are the likes of Foxy, Ken, Shingler etc then that needs to happen now anyway regardless of the financial situation. A good time to invest in our younger stars

I hope the regions have robust dialogue about players that might become available.
A region with too much talent in a position to keep them all might find a match for that player at another region.

Right Wil. We have a surplus of scrum halves, centres and hookers, but at the end of the season we may have too few second rows, outside halves, back 3 players, and carrying forwards in general. Time for swap-shop.

Wait a minute , it wasn't that long ago we had to many opensides and within a few weeks we didn't have any fit... I feel certain positions because of the type of play need strength in depth , others not so ....we also need to start and develop our backs to cover more than 1 position , this will give us greater resources to buy a further player or 2 in positions that all ways end up with high amount of injuries

You would like to think Hardy would be perfect for the Ospreys, if we retained Blacker and Davies that is.
Thomson and Kalamafoni are 2 high profile players, along with Ken, JD, Halfpenny, Lee, Shingler and Elias presumably as he has over 25 caps? Lezana possibly.
I would be disappointed if we lost any one of Wyn Jones, Lousi, Macleod, Gareth Davies, Jonny Williams or McNicholl.
Know I’ve missed a few, but can’t think on the top of my head. Thinks it’s far more important to retain a lot of our hopefully future stars.

I guess Patch is another and perhaps sadly Scott? Samson must be at risk as well and Hardy perhaps as we have Cawdor and Blacker plus the two younger ones ? We shall have to wait but losing quality forwards is really not what we want to see.. Kal can’t be replaced by Josh or Carwyn or in terms of serious carries and ball skills although I fully understand his reasons. It’s an awful time to be a coach as well in this climate

We have too few quality players to give any away to the other Regions and nor do I want any of their outcasts. We have a good nucleus of young players but the next few seasons are going to be a huge struggle. All because of greed by small minded men who want to keep their place aboard the gravy train.

I read a good piece on this somewhere that a squad of 40 May struggle to field a side with HIAs and injuries - imagine you have 15 players out. It’s all a shambles - how can we be expected to win silverware on this? It will just mean more fatigue, injuries, less performance until the argument for 2/3 regions is stronger.

Plus some international call ups on top.
The RFC (who struggle now !) will be taking a hit every week with players supplementing the main Scarlets squad.

It sounds like Cardiff are having to offer quality players derisory contracts in order to fit under the salary cap for next season. Some of the outcasts might be quite handy.

Would only take Adams out of their backs in front of any of ours. Would probably take Williams in 2nd row and Carre, but only if Franks staying, and Botham from back row. The rest can stay where they are

At the moment ,until we have concrete evidence, a lot of talk is sheer speculation. Its a worrying time for the players and their families ,and I feel for them.
Of course , we are all concerned fans, because there is no clarity, and when there there is, there is still going to be worry, because the landscape is going to look very different, both here, and across Wales.
Its a very sad state of affairs!

Inter regional transfers (as opposed to players being poached) are a bit hit and miss for sure, but if we are thin in a position once the dust has settled on who has signed/has not signed, I think it is an option when in reality the alternatives either don't exist, or more likely are unaffordable.
The other think I see is the Prem will house more ex regional players next year, signing them on short term deals oif the need arises is an option.
Merthyr picked up Ashley Beck for example, and although he's not on Cardiff's books per se, he is in their Euro squad. I think we should have considered likewise with Harri Doel...and so on.
As for the RFC, unless some benefactor steps in specifically to support them alone, then it doesn't look great.

For sure its a challenging time but Dwayne, in fairness, came over very well. The finances are what they are & it is clear that the Scarlets are well down the road planning for a rocky couple of years - but importantly we are still alive & fighting.
Dwayne suggests that half of the 20 out of contract players will leave. It's a fair guess that many of those will be senior higher paid guys. Wil makes a valid point in suggesting that the knock on effect of the squad reductions across the regions will be more player quality in the Premiership & the opportunity to pad slimmed down squads with experienced players from the Premiership on short term deals.
Our academy has never been more important; us supporters have been screaming this season to give our youngsters a chance - well over the next two years they are going to do a lot of heavy lifting.

I thought Shanklin last Sunday, unusually, talked a great deal of sense. He stated that the age profile of the Scarlets squad was such that very senior guys who may have their best days behind them were clearly the obvious choices to leave while also the Scarlets had a good bunch of young players ready or almost ready to step up. He didn't feel that Cardiff & Ospreys had such favourable profiles.

Another takeaway from Dwayne's interview with our Steff was that he rated this boy Ben Williams to step up across the back row next season. He also confirmed that new signings would be confined to the forwards for next season. Bearing in mind that the squad is going to be cut by 12-14 from this season I suggest something along the lines of this :-
Sione, Blade, a hooker, Phil Price, Jefferies, WGJ, Javan, Lezana, Iestyn Rees, a scrum half, Foxy, Baldwin Halfpenny. I have not included Rawlins, Helps & Cubby in this list despite the fact that they were part of this season's squad.

Can we assume the majority of players that don't play much part of the season going forward are maybe not part of our plans next year? Is it better to give them experience this year than starting it on a new season? Ie we see more of Ben Williams than say lezana.

16 Kemsley Mathias 17 Shaun Evans 18 Sam Wainwright? 19 Jac Price 20 Dan Davis 21 Gareth Davies 22 Dan Jones 23 Ioan Nicholas

Think that would be the best way around the international window, at least regions know at most how much they’re paying for wages and any payments for players would act as revenue.

There's no requirement to compensate in Rugby, except for all the extra release that we sign up to in Wales such as: - An extra week's release before international test windows (2 weeks in total)
- The 4th AI
- No requirement to release unpicked players or any players during fallow weekends
- Several other training camps throughout the season
That's what WRU get out of the deal really. If there was no agreement, we'd only have to release players 6 days before the first test, only 3 autumn tests, get any players not in the 23 back by the Tuesday before the game etc.

Not sure so can't comment, but this is welsh rugby. Just wondering if the regions can deny players playing unless the wru pay for their services. After all this wouldn't surprise me after the whole debacle is messy and can get worse

I've always thought that we get more than our fair share of injuries Mark and what Rob evans said about how much harder training at the Dragons was.

So with somebody like Ken. He certainly will be playing in the RWC, so his career will play through until end Oct/early Nov 2023. His Scarlets contract ends May or June and isn't renewed. Do the WRU pick up his salary? How much will that be for? Same as now? Pre this agreement, the WRU paid for 80% of internationals, but that changes in the new season I think, right, and Scarlets would pay him IF we renewed his contract. I am a bit confused who pays what until when, as you can tell.

I think we are all pretty confused and that includes the WRU! Apparently the players that are on the 80/20 contracts will now have to be paid for fully by their region at the amount that was set at the time. Plus the regions are expected to make all efforts to keep those players or possibly face fines. How that affects any new contracts for those players I don't know.
There is surely have to be some compensation for the release of player to team Wales? Especially if they are broken by them as is often the case.

I think its players who were in the welsh 38 but are no longer in the 38 that regions have to pay in full for. Thats what will hit cardiff with jenkins botham etc

I think Mr Lee makes a sensible attempt at predicting what's likely to happen although I also hope we make a serious effort to retain, Patchell, McNichol and Wyn Jones, and as someone suggested earlier maybe Ken and Shingler in some sort of player/coach role.

The calls that we were scratching our heads over previously(Patchell out of the team etc.) now seem to make a little more sense and have possibly given our players who wouldn’t ordinarily played more game time as the board had foreseen the situation that was going to play out and planned for that.
Following on from Muderack and Peels comments it sounds like we’ve been honest with our players and team selection has echoed that also.

He went to Coedcae, like me. I remember when we gave him his first pro contract - 5 years in length.

Ok, but what about those who dont have a region / club come season end but do play for Wales e.g. Ken? Ken has been quoted as saying he will play for Wales for free. He may have no chance now.
And out of interest, do pro rugby players get paid from start of pre season through to last game, so maybe 9 months of the year? In the NFL they play 17 games, so their salary is divided by 17 and they get that after each game. Extra for playoffs I assume.
Cheers

Any player in the 38 has to have WRU approval to be able to leave, regardless of contract status. I wouldn't want to speculate who's contract finishes this May or not. Contracts are annual - i.e. 12 months.

Thanks for the clarification re the 38, what a mess though. No small wonder the WRU want the benefactors to step in as there is no way you could run a business under those conditions. It raises so many questions for the regions and the players with regards to pay, length of contract and I should imagine clauses that will be included in them.

Pretty close although Id be surprised if Wyn and Ken go and Im not sure if Samson will ever return tbh. Also lets not forget that although we have budget constraints, there is a huge amount of savings in those leavers, we should be able to make some an offer

I wonder if they now think that they should have just allowed pro rugby to go its own way 20 years ago rather than the union refusing to release control?

Although you can't predict who'll get injured when people with good injury records are more valuable than ever, the likes of Kalamafoni have played more games in 3 years than people like Moriarty in 5 years.

Yes--just saw your article with Nigel Walker too ... this caught my eye!
'That (NS38) no longer exists, we have moved to a different system. So the allocation is not 80% WRU and 20% region. All the money has been allocated to the region and they spend it as they see fit. Anybody who is in contract and is a player of national interest who has got a contract through until June 2024, if they wanted to get out of that contract it would be a conversation between a player or a player's agent, the region and the WRU. I would say to that player continue to talk to the region and I will be involved with that conversation. We will just be honest, open and transparent about the position"
Great article by the way.
