Well Lofty ever since I went to see Dafydd Iwan in a barn somewhere in deepest Nantgaredig probably 40 years ago I have always had a huge positive reaction when I hear Yma o hyd. It always has and always will move me.

As a side note the warm up act that night in Nantgaredig was a very young comic called Nigel Owen - mam fach happy days.

Forgive me for this but this poem by Charles bukowski...is my personal motivational poem..saved me in so many ways...just thought I'd share.

Your life is your life don't let it be clubbed into dank submission.
Be on the watch
There are ways out.
There is a light somewhere.
It may not be much light but it beats the darkness.
Be on the watch.
The gods will offer you chances.
Know them.
Take them.
You can't beat death but you can beat death in life, sometimes.
And the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be.
Your life is your life.
Know it while you have it.
You are marvellous the gods wait to delight in you.

Interesting topic, Lofty - have you read any of Bukowski's novels? I liked 'Post Office' and 'Ham on Rye'.

In response to your request - I have many favourites, but for now I'll offer these:

"He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde

and for the Physicists amongst us:

"Housekeeping is nothing more than a losing encounter with entropy." Claire Oshetsky

" When you know within yourself there is something you want to do and I believe that all of us were born with a purpose, that all of us have something we are supposed to do.
And all of us have some goodness within us and that goodness gives us a responsibility to manifest our greatness.
Not only is it possible for you to have your dream, but it's necessary, it's necessary for you to have it, that you work on it , that you develop yourself, that you go for what is yours in the Universe".

"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made." - Groucho Marx.

I still think this is brilliant and very appropriate for much of our society, unfortunately. I think about it most days listening to politicians, bosses, anyone on TV really.

Plus, in terms of physics quotes, how about Oppenheimer "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds".

Brutal. Although I think was originally a Hindu saying? I doubt about the same topic.

" The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies, was made in the interiors of collapsing stars.
We are made of starstuff"

Carl Sagan.

My childhood hero, when he spoke his voice was magical, his thoughts, his imagination and his capture and beauty of words inspired me in ways no other has been able to. As a child who was bored with school he was the teacher that captivated my mind with statistics and facts that were delivered so effortlessly and with an eloquence that still stirs my soul.

His books opened my mind, his words and his humanity and his beliefs in the real fragility of our World still resonate deeply within me.

Often you read who would you like to sit down for 10 minutes on a park bench and talk to, it would be Carl Sagan.... NASA, Astronomer, Scientist, astrophysicist, astrobiology, author.

He couldn't pronounce his He's.  Sounded like Kermit when he said uman instead of Human ...but one of the iconic series of all time , right up there with the Ascent of Man and great sound tracks from vangelis

Beautiful quote. Another great one often attributed to the incomparable Isaac Newton is:

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

This is, though, a borrowing - apparently - from earlier metaphors. Newton wasn't wrong to use it, though!

On another note that music was from Vangelis " Heaven and Hell " album, which introduced the magic of Vangelis.
The original Cosmos series had a profound effect on me tbh...the whole package.

Forgive me for this.

" Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us.
On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you have ever heard of, every human who ever was, lived out their lives.
The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter, every forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals , every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every Saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam".

Just part of what is written about the Pale blue dot.

Carl Sagan.

You work 8 hours to live 4
You work 6 days to enjoy 1
You work 8 hours to have 15 minutes to eat
You work 8 hours to sleep 5
You work all year to have 2 weeks holiday
You work all your life to retire in old age
And contemplate only your last breaths

Eventually you realise that life is nothing but a parody of yourself practicing your own oblivion

We have become accustomed to material and social slavery that we no longer see the chains.

Life is a short journey, live it ! collect memories not materials.
