Like many on here I have been pondering the make up of our squad with our enforced reductions. My gut feeling is that we are probably better off than most regions having two areas which other regions may be short of.

Firstly we have a number of squad members who are naturally coming up to their twilight years - this will not have come as a surprise to us so planning will/should have been in place. I include in this category - Halfpenny, Foxy, Ken, Phil Price & Sione.

Secondly we have some players who have had to retire/move due to injury/lack of action etc - Blade, Lezana, Rawlins, Helps, Jeffries, Baldwin.

I guess my point is that we have reductions to our squad which were probably going to happen anyway.

For sure some will leave that we want to keep - Javan for example but so far we are coming through this ahead of our rivals.

Finally we then have to look to the future & where we stand. Undoubtedly the financial constraints will mean that players from the academy are going to seeing more playing time than historically. Many of us have been calling for this for many years. Looking at the French example most, if not all, of their under 20's squad were full time members of either top 14 squads or Pro D. It is very usual to see 19-21 year olds breaking into the full French squad even with their depth.

We have young players who are about to be given their first team chances - Sam O'Connor, Lewis Morgan, Pritchard, Caleb Salmon, Griff Evans, Luca Giannini, Ben Williams, Harri Williams, Archie Hughes, Eddie James.

To sum up I guess it is certainly ground zero for regional rugby at the moment but am I as despondent as I thought I would be - unequivocally no. The off field management have to realise that quality coaching is going to be fundamental to our survival. Nobody is going to tell me that we do not have talented footballers who are able to compete but it is going to take very canny management & coaching to do it.

Great post...as you mentioned about not being despondent.....im excited by the exuberance of inexperienced players replacing experienced players. Yes we know we need game leadership and gained experience but for me how many wasted talented players star brightness been diminished by no opportunity to shine at the Scarlets.

All this mayhem and turmoil may be a blessing in disguise....im super excited at what the future holds for us, there are gems out there but if we don't dig we will never know.

Bring it on.

Our bench could be made up of :-

Sean, Mathias, Samson, Jac Price, Josh McLoud, Blacker, Dan, Scott Williams with Ioan, Steff Evans & Eddie as back up. Up front our back up will include Steff Thomas, Daf Hughes, Harri O'Connor, Ben Williams.

One top priority signing I hope we make is a 2nd row to give us 4 frontline locks to share the load.

Has Foxy retired or is he considered not good enough or just too expensive?

I suspect they may reluctantly release Samson. Now constantly injured and high risk. In his prime 5 years ago he was superb but especially in today’s very tough financial world I just very sadly don’t see him staying.

Has Lewis Rawlings departure ever been announced?

Nicholas will be a crucial player next season with his ability to cover every back position. Still a very thinned out squad. Fitness and injuries will determine how we do.

Joe Roberts has been excellent this season but I would like to see how a backline of Cawdor, Costelow, Conbeer, JBW, Eddie, Rogers, Jmac would go, lots of power and pace there.

If Patchell leaves I think we've got to be looking at signing another quality 10 or a talented youngster who is unlikely to get to much game time with rival regions - Dan Edwards of the Ospreys springs to mind.
Obviously we could do with a big ball carrying second row and a powerful winger, but they will not be easy to find or finance.
Carwyn is showing positive signs of progress but I'm yet to be convinced that he is capable of replacing Kalamafoni, but finding a big ball-carrying 8 is an extravagance until Carwyn is given more opportunity to show what he can do.

I am sure I read on one of the platforms he is squatting some ridiculous weights so perhaps they are giving him a full recovery and pre season to ensure the Achilles doesn't go again, and at the moment anyway we are coping okay in the front row

Samson's in good shape ( if that's permissible as a description for a prop), very likely to play this season.

Good news about Samson. We either need him or WGJ to be a reliable squad player. Assume HOC and Wainwright make up the first choice 23 right now/next season.

I think he is incredibly important to us. I'm a little uneasy why some think it's ok to let go players in key positions like this. Good TH's are hard to come by, and Samson has only just turned 30.

Achilles injuries are tough for anyone, and it's long rehab for sure, but the injuries were different ankles and were in fact 7 years apart.

If Samson gets back anywhere near his best he will be our No 1 tight head for sure. It wasn't that many years ago when I saw him take a fully loaded Leinster front row apart at PYS. As I say anywhere near his best & Gatland will be all over him.

I’m not sure anybody is saying to cut Samson. My
Belief is let’s see how he does, and hopefully he’s back 100% and a well needed player in the team. If that’s the case, I could see WGJ leaving. Jeffries too perhaps?

I thought Wainright was an only to the end of the season job? I'd like us to keep him mind.

I'd rather have a Beirne-type second row than just a big bruiser. All the top sides are moving away from that (apart from the French league itself perhaps). I agree size is good, but you need to be more than just a lump enforcer.

TBH if we could poach Tshuinza and Jenkins from Exeter we'd be sorted.

Sidenote... I wish him well but I'd be pushing Hardy out of the door. Anyone who has seen Cawdor, Blacker, Hughes and Williams are plenty (personally I think Hughes will be our first choice in 1-3 seasons).

Assuming we will have a squad of 38/39 players (not including academy lads) I think we will be looking at a squad close to:

1. Wyn Jones
2. Kemsley Mathias
3. Steff Thomas
4. Sam OConnor
5. Ryan Elias
6. Ken Owen
7. Daf Hughes
8. Shaun Evans
9. Sam Wainwright
10. Hari OConnor
11. Samson Lee
10. WGJ
11. Sam Lousi
12. Vaea Fifita
13. Morgan Jones
14. Jac Price
15. Josh Macleod
16. Dan Davis
17. Carwyn Tuipolotu
18. Ben Williams
19. Iwan Shenton
20. Gareth Davies
21. Dane Blacker
22. Archie Hughes
23. Hari Williams
24. Sam Costelow
25. Dan Jones
26. Josh Phillips
27. Ryan Conbeer
28. Steff Evans
29. Tom Rogers
30. Johnny Mcnicholl
31. Foxy
32. Johnny Williams
33. Joe Roberts
34. Scott Williams
35. Ioan Nicholas
36. Eddie James
37.
38.
39.

Looking at above, pure guess work, with potentially 2 or 3 players coming in - back row and lock...and depending who stays/goes, potentially a tight head as well. Ben Frys name been thrown around on social media that he's heading our way. Decent signing if true.
What the above does show is that we will be better off than other 3 regions...also, i think this season has been a bit of a blessing. whether we knew this chaos was coming, but its as if we have planned for a worst case scenario more than other 3. We have brought through the likes of Kemsley, OConnor, Jac Price, Tuipolotu, Costelow, Joe Roberts etc, Shenton, Ben Williams and Ed James now having some game time as well...will hold us in good stead for next season IMO especiall as I dont see us losing much many to the World Cup.

Do we want to lose multi-millions of sponsorship and stick with the current governance rules, or change them, allow more independents and set about completely changing the culture and thinning the gravy.

Have just started a topic on General Rugby called Sunday’s Governance Vote and posted an interesting article.

That he never lets us down, whatever position he plays is surely an attribute of importance and the fact that he can cover 3 or 4 positions must be significant.

With squads being shrunk we will need more players who are comfortable playing in more than one position.
Props who can hold their own on either side of the scrum (very rare these days I know)
2nd rows who can play somewhere in the back row and back rowers who can do a job in the 2nd row.
Backs who can cover more than 1 position comfortably and more than 1 kicker on the park.

Totally agree the daftest position on the pitch needs a specific mindset and frame and Samson fits it perfectly...hope he is injury free going forward...no pun intended.

WOL reporting on Halfpenny's future.

Peel said: "Those talks are ongoing. We're having conversations with him around his future. Those sorts of decisions, especially with someone like him, will be made in the next couple of weeks, I suppose."

I assumed there would be no way we could afford to renew his contract without the WRU 80%, but sounds like we are exploring options. I would be chuffed if we found a way, but not keeping my hopes up.

Do I remember reading he had been doing some coaching as well?

Whose contracts are up at the end of the season? - have the Scarlets released the names. I'm afraid that unless we are legally obliged to do so, it would be difficult to keep Foxy, Scott Williams and Corey Baldwin, when we also have centres Jonny Williams, Joe Roberts, Eddie James, Ioan Nicholas and Macs Page in the squad.
Where we are weakest is at second row and outside half and we need to be looking for relatively inexpensive, promising youngsters to sign in these positions.
It will be very sad to bid farewell to some older players who have made great contributions over the years. Lets just hope that those who want to, manage to get a final payout at clubs with quite a bit more money than the Welsh regions are likely to have next season.

How are we weak at OH? Costelow is an excellent prospect, and may well go on to win many caps for Wales. Patchell is a superb attacking 10 with a long boot as well. Dan Jones is a steady eddie type who never lets us down, and a class goal kicker. If we retain those three - no problem.

I'd say no. 8 is more problematic... Kalamafoni has been immense, but I don't see anyone with the same engine capable of making so many carries per match/season. Carwyn will do his bit and is developing, but do we want to shift Fifita from his current second row/no. 6 role? That would leave another gap, and he's a different type of runner to Kala - fast but less of a battering ram.

I sincerely hope that Patchell stays but it has been rumoured that he will be one of the ones moving on. If so we are depending on Costelow to remain injury free and not being called up for Wales or we only have Dan Jones who is hardly a top class outside half in a crucial position.
I agree that No8 is also a weakness with Kalamafoni's departure and I wish I had your confidence that Carwyn is a good replacement with more pace. I think Fifita should stay in the back row and maybe move to 8, unless Carwyn can make a lot of progress or we can find another ball carrying 8.

10 clearly is going to be a problem next season despite Aber fan's optimism.

Strong rumours that Patchell won't be returning, Dan Jones is a third string 10 at best in my opinion, and with the impending international retirements of Biggar, Anscombe post RWC, Costelow could be out of bounds for us in the first three months of 2024.

Is Corey Baldwin injured? When he left for Exeter there was a huge gnashing and a wailing about leaving him go and then he returned, but since then he’s barely appeared. He may be on the release list I suspect? 🤔

Eztabeth, couldn’t cope with being handled by Morgan Jones he stated in an interview last week ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’

Is there a list of the academy players being released? Surprised about Josh, was wondering if they’d see him as a long term fullback.

He would have to be very cheap as he struggles to get a game for Bristol in the Premiership at the moment.

It’s a good thing, he will go there for the rest of the season and realise that he is a million times better off staying this side of the bridge.

As with other leavers, it never ceases to amaze me how details leak out about players leaving. You would think things like that were absolutely confidential and not something anyone would talk about, even to friends and family until its announced formally.

He plays everywhere in the back line. Anyone know what his favourite position is?

Season ago I think it was reported he and Lam wanted to focus him at 12. Hasn’t really happened. For us, we could use him at fullback or wing.

Played really well at 12 against us few seasons back in Europe. Think Wing/Full back is his preference. Can also slot in at 10.

an interesting doppio play combo with Costelow..

He's even played scrum-half. So a 7-1 split next year Smile

As a Cardiff boy he could have been a good investment for Cardiff as they are losing Priestland and Evans.

He is 21!?  I assumed he was mid-20s, feels like he has been around much longer. Younger then Costelow!

Having a squad which wont be too affected by Welsh call-ups next season will be key. I suspect Gatland's 10s will be Bigger, Anscombe, O Williams and/or Patchell. Assuming Patchell is moving on, we would do well to have two international prospects 10s in the squad in Costelow and Lloyd, who are bit further down the pecking order.

This would be a good move. With news circulating that Patchell is off, we need another 10 and having someone who can slot in at centre or in the back 3 also would be valuable. Hope this is true

If true it will be great to have 2 10s with pace. Lloyd imo is too small at centre, has all the talent to be Wales 10.

He would’ve been, but it sounds like they’ve got very little wiggle room left under this new salary cap. They picked a bad time to sign Faletau and take Liam Williams off our hands. They’re two very expensive players and aren’t available for large chunks of the season.

Additionally, it seems as though Adams will also be staying there. It was reported a few weeks ago that his move to Lyon had fallen through because it was a 'very complicated issue'.

We don't need any more centres but 10 is a different matter. Hope there is some substance to the rumour especially if he also gives further options at wing and 15.
t's now that we'll find out how good Cubby is in his recruitment role.

Adams is stil under contract, someone would've needed to buy him out.

Plus there’s the impression from the WRU that anyone in the national squad will need their approval to leave any current contract.

Cardiff might well have said he could go with no fee just to give them more budget to redeploy.

If the Ioan story is true he would be a fantastic signing. Versatile players will be like gold dust with reduced squads. 10 is his position without a doubt & he may well get to concentrate for most of the season on that position initially as back up to Costelow.

Am I right in thinking Costellow can cover centre too? I’m not advocating playing players out of position unnecessarily, but with the number of injuries players pick up in the modern game it’s so handy having guys who can cover more than one position if necessary.

Theoretically both can play 12 but in the modern game I struggle to think of boys that small making it. The 10/12 channel is a huge target area for opposition runners be that back rowers or well built 12's. I do not question the bravery or indeed technique of either but their skills lie elsewhere in my opinion. We have JBR, Scott & Eddie to do that job.

in nowaday rugby many teams play with a double play or second receiver, we dont or not so evident..
a combination Costelow/Lloyd could be an interesting idea, considering all the defensive risks..in this way no doubt about Costelow defensive skills

We have wings who can do that (Steff, JMac) so having a third outside back to add to the mix should be good.
