During the game, we were playing out of our 22 and the ball was passed to Joe Roberts. He reached for it, touched it, and then went to regather the ball. Before he had a chance he was tackled. He was not in possession. The ref indicated a knock on advantage and the Ospreys went on to score. I thought that as he was tackled without the ball, then a fair decision would have call the knock on advantage but to give the Ospreys a scrum, as their player infringed. Unsure so I was wondering if there are any refs out there who could clarify please? ------------- Page the oracle |

| Not a ref, but I thought exactly the same thing and shouted tackled without the ball at the TV. As far as I know he was never in possession so should've been tackled. |

I could be wrong, but I thought that the juggling/dropping to kick it situation only occurred AFTER it was under control. E.g. you have possession and then you drop it to kick it, or for some reason you start juggling it, but this is always preceded by you gaining possession of the ball in the first place. Joe definitely never had possession of the ball at any point.

Nope, sorry, that’s not what I said. Using your example but applying what I said before, IF he was carrying the ball (say, had caught a pass and was in possession - think about NFL for this too any that watch), and then started juggling all the way to the line he’s a fair game. IF the ball comes out to him and his first touch is to knock it up, and then he knocks it again, (eg juggling), and then as he goes to catch it on the third attempt and is tackled before he can, I think that’s tackled without the ball as he never had it in the first place. Just IMHO though (and I’m happy to be proved wrong by a ref etc.)

Using the NFL analogy, maybe that's where the phrase "sack the juggler" emanates from.....although Urban Dictionary provides a completely different take on it
