I was watching an old You Tube clip from 1971 where East Wales played the touring Wallabies. Interesting that the team included 7 Cardiff players.
They now seem to be Central?
Just illustrates what a crock of poo this current situation is.

Anyone who has looked at a map of Cymru before can see Cardiff isn't central even in the South.
It's just another word for the capital I'm afraid, it's been mentioned before that the distance between Cardiff and the Dragons is the same as between the ourselves and Ospreys, so not sure if there's any real argument for the allocated regions if we are going to completely ignore current supporters.
I think they're ploughing on ahead with going down to 3 because they feel they've been told they need to be brave in changing things, even if that brave decision making isn't well thought out.
Personally I think going down to three teams will be disastrous both in the short (currently and in the next 4 or so years) and long term (20+), and will only potentially have a marginal of benefit in the medium (5-15 years)

Absolutely and in a perfect world it would be south, mid and north. Trouble is all the top level rugby is in the south so it becomes muddy. For me, east is Cardiff and gwent, Mid is loughor bridge east to bridgend/cowbridge and west is loughor bridge west. Where mid and north wales fall into that remains to be seen

But wouldn't going out and looking for investment and funding the regions to an appropriate level so they could compete be seen as being brave and changing things

Yes it would be seen as being brave and changing things - but I don't see it changing things for the better in the long term (or evidently in the short). They've put themselves in the position of desperately needing to change things, but because of that desperation they're not able to look at anything in the long term.

The brave and innovative thing the WRU could (or should) have done was to invest in a 5th region covering the north of Wales, say the country north of a line between Aberystwyth and Y Drenewydd (Newtown).
I fear it is too late in their thinking cycle (if they ever had any) for them to take this route.

The WRU never mentioned "Central" when they announced 3 teams. One in the Capitol, one in the East, one in the West.

With regards to Cardiff (not being central) but actually in East Wales (on a map anyway), Newport is equidistant to Cardiff as we are to the Ospreys and the English border is no more than 30 Miles from Cardiff. This means that even if the WRU Cardiff and Newport merged the area that they would cover isn’t vast, meaning that upcoming players wouldn’t need to travel too far to attend academies /training sessions, and this would be even less so if both survived the chop. However if one of the west sides folded/got axed/ merged, the area left to cover would be massive and unmanageable. If the border moved down as far west as Bridgend (not likely as Dastardly Dave doesn’t seem to travel west of the Jail of Glamorgan) that would mean that the region/franchise would still be almost 90 miles wide (west to East) and Probably well over 100 miles (north to south). This would be unacceptable in a modern country with superb rail and road networks, but West, Mid and North Wales have been derelected by both Westminster and Welsh governments so even being able to travel to training and matches would become a major challenge for many. This would then most likely lead to the players of tomorrow turning to football instead, meaning that there would be another lost generation of rugby talent. I remember when my nephew was in the scarlets academy about 14 years ago the commitment was hard then and we only lived about 6 miles away from PYS, when you have to commit to drive someone to training 3 times a week (whilst holding down a full time job and bringing up a small family of your own, plus my nephew was then having to train with his local club 2 nights a week and play every Sunday and occasionally on a Saturday. Imagine a family having to drive their son/nephew from Fishguard to Llandarcy 3 or 4 times a week (usually after school/work) whilst holding down a full time job and trying to balance their lives with others, it would be almost impossible to do so without it having a detrimental effect on their lives.

Capital region is even more narrow than a central region, they just seem to dig bigger holes for themselves, totally inept and out of touch with the welsh people who ultimately provide the players for the regions, team Wales and the money generated on international days.

Great point, this is just one of many significant consequence of their current proposals.

If you go by counties, it then paints an even more complicated picture.
Carmarthenshire is by far the furthest West than any other Southern Region (apart from Pembrokeshire), and is actually the biggest region out of all.
West Glamorgan Covers Swansea.
Mid or Central Glamorgan covers Bridgend.
Cardiff is in East Glamorgan.
And then Newport is in Gwent.
West, Mid/Central and Gwent are all similar size (on the map)
One thing is for sure, we may be close to Swansea, but we are by far not in any way in West Glamorgan and Swansea are not in Carmarthenshire.
So for me, West Wales is us (Carmarthenshire), Swansea and Cardiff are Central (in Glamorgan), and Newport is East (Gwent).

Cardiff were given a huge player boost when the Celtic Warriors were disbanded and their current catchment area includes Merthyr, Pontypridd, the Rhondda valleys and all the communities between the Rhymni and Elai valleys - a huge and organised rugby playing population. Adding to that congestion would make it even more difficult for talented youngsters to progress in Wales, and make English colleges and clubs ever more attractive. If this hare brained scheme goes ahead then the western region should include all areas west of Bridgend, even if the area of the region makes Academy training difficult.

Cardiff is only 40 minutes from England! You can't have a 'region' called East Wales squeezed in between Cardiff and the border.
Unless East Wales includes Bristol Bath and Gloucester, so the region can start supplying players to Wales for once.

Have a quick check Gwyn - the clubs mentioned just over the border already supply 25% of the squad & counting......

Don't know about you Nigel but I opted out a long time ago. I feel sorry for fellow supporters who keep tying themselves & others in knots pondering the various options open to the WRU. I've taken up watching paint dry as an alternative form of entertainment......

And don't forget you have to mention in every post that the Dragons are rubbish because that's sure to alter the outcome

The initial 5 regions were based on the Welsh counties, prior to 1996 reorganisation. Dragons covered the county of Gwent Cardiff covered the county of South Glamorgan Warriors covered the count of Mid Glamorgan Ospreys covered the county of West Glamorgan Scarlets covered the county of Dyfed
Having a Cardiff Capitol region plus an East Wales region makes no sense. Particularly as Newport and Monmouthshire are officially part of the current Cardiff Capitol Region City Deal.
The only explanation is the the WRU fear a legal challenge from Dragons as they have a signed and agreed PRA 25 contract.
