Too old, I have his DOB as 17/11/05. So he’s 20 prior to Jan 1, which is the cutoff.

He didn’t. I think his illness didn’t help, missed most of the 18-19 year old period, and was getting back to fitness earlier this year.

Wow that's crazy. Considering Morgan Morse and Jonny Green played so often for them to see Tiaan not play a game is insane to me.
Ok so on that how has Tiaan played for Llandovery and if well should we start to blood him towards the end of this season? He was so good for the academy a few years ago I was so excited by him.

This is where Peel is poor, Gwynne is good enough to be given a start by Gloucester in a champions cup match but if he was with us he probably wouldn’t be deemed ready until he was at least 21 years old and had played at least half a season of rugby in the SRC.
We have this complete reluctance to play someone too young or early in their career.

Largely agree but I think Gwynne did well in the early season Premiership cup games and has been a regular since then so Gloucester like other PREM teams have a competition where they can try out young talent at a level which is better than most games at championship level and can fast track those who thrive.

Definitely a game of two halves. The first half team the match was a fast pace lots of pressure loads of time in the Cardiff half and dominated the territory and possession stats. The 2nd half was a completely different possession and territory slightly shifted toward Cardiff favour with the game a lot more scrappy and quite a few injury stoppages which didn’t help. The Wales U20 1st half blond haired winger certainly has some wheels on him which was nice to see

Whiffin confirms Wales U20 Six Nations squad

Steffan Emanuel on his way to scoring against England in last year's clash at Cardiff Arms Park
Steffan Emanuel will co-captain Wales U20 alongside Deian Gwynne
Head coach Richard Whiffin has named a 40-strong Wales squad for the 2026 U20 Six Nations with Gloucester back row Deian Gwynne and Cardiff Rugby centre Steffan Emanuel confirmed as co-captains. They will lead a side of 23 forwards and 17 backs with 11 players returning from last season. Whiffin believes the duo’s combined leadership skills will be a vital asset to the squad as they prepare for the first game of the campaign against England at Franklin’s Gardens. “We felt last year there was a lot of emphasis and leadership through Harry Beddall – sometimes with a back rower like Deian Gwynne as well – you have got your head in a lot of breakdowns,” explained Whiffin.
“We feel Steffan Emanuel who was a vice captain last year has grown in his leadership and I feel he will help Deian tactically with having a broader view of the game while Deian can prosper from an emotional point of view – follow me sort of attitude. “They have come through the age group together and get on well and I think they will be able to dovetail off each other and split the role. It’s more about splitting the role during the week – on game day it kind of takes care of itself but we feel those two will be able to work well and make sure we get all of our messages across to the team,” added Whiffin. The group of 11 players returning for a second bite of the cherry bring a lot of experience to the team according to Whiffin. “We want to get to the point where we’ve got as many second years as possible just for that growth value but it’s a squad that has a good balance of first timers who bring lots of energy into it and second timers who have got the experience. “It’s a strong squad where we are happy with what we have selected – it was a very tough and robust process to go through but we think we have a squad who can attack the championship. “There is extreme strength in our back row and back three – I think we have got a lot of experience in our midfield and we possess some really exciting halfbacks. “Tight five wise we’ve got a group who are dynamic and they give us probably something different around our ball carrying that maybe we haven’t had in our tight five for a couple of years.” Wales’ first game of the campaign will be against England who were denied a coveted grand slam last season after Wales stunned them at Cardiff Arms Park “What a way to start the tournament with the old enemy,” said Whiffin. “Going up to Franklin’s Gardens, probably one of the best surfaces in the English Premiership, there will be a good partisan crowd up there so it will be a great experience for the boys – something we can get our heads around, get excited for and we will walk towards the challenge head on.” Wales U20 Six Nations squad

It's worrying the amount of injuries he's already had, is his body up to the rigours of pro rugby would now be my question. Slowly ease him back in and build up his tolerance for physicality before putting him through the paces of professional rugby.

Is the U20's our qualifying team for national status in the absence of an A team? If so I would imagine that would be a last straw event so as to A. tie them down and B. not destroy the ambitions by sitting on the bench for your club

You're right, SB [link to regulation here: [ https://www.world.rugby/organisation/governance/regulations/reg-9" rel="nofollow - https://www.world.rugby/organisation/governance/regulations/reg-9 ], but young players have often played for Scarlets rather U20 in the past iirc. I think the U20 coaches look at player development as a priority and for youngsters who are ready, URC is better for them than U20, so unless there's no-one else available and suitable for the U20s, I'd expect CLJ to be available to us.

The U20s losses have been disappointing and tinged with some self-inflicted wounds. However, I do think this is the most promissing crop of U20s we have had for years. You can make a case for half a dozen or more to feature in future Wales senior squads. Just sort out the domestic set up...

Yet again changes needed to be made but came too late. The starting team did nothing wrong to be fair but if you’re bringing the bench on to make a difference then starting that process with 20 min to go is being more hopeful more than helpful. For me this needs to start at the latest the 50 min mark to let the bench get into the pace of the game and then make the impact. The signs were there at half time that a refresh was needed. It was a good game Ireland very well coached and street wise the weather didn’t turn till end of the game so no complaints really

Who will be our 10 when Costi, Hawkins and CLJ will be away with the Wales/u20 squad?
I think we have first call on U20’s players.
I don't think so. It's the international window so clubs have to release players
I really don't this applies at age grade.
If we want to play a player in the Under 20's squad then we can.
If you look at section 9.7i there is a specific mention of international windows for National U20 teams although the dates seem incorrect.

CLJ will be with us for the Connaught game, 20's released him from the squad.

That's what I always thought, but the regulation says this:
9.7(ii) Hemisphere Release Periods and Tournament Release Period
The Hemisphere Release Periods are: [etc. then
(b) Six Nations Release Period
(i) The Right to Release for Matches shall apply to Players who are
eligible pursuant to Regulation 8 to represent the senior, the next
senior National Representative Team or the Under 20 National
Representative Team of a Six Nations Union in the Six Nations
Championship during the Six Nations Release Period.
Seems extreme and I don't think the U20s coaches try to enforce it, but I read the rules as saying they could. Moot point, because he did play for us and I'd bet on him starting on Friday.
Edit\; Didn't read the last two posts

Pretty sure if he expressed an interest to play they'd let him anyway.

The U20 coaches will sometimes take a view that it is better for player’ s development if the play a URC game rather than an International U20 game - think that was the case with Morgan Morse last season. So they have first call but can release to play .

I agree with you. The speed & physically of a URC/Prem game is a significant step up from an U20 international game so I've been told.
