Few of those selections are subject to players recovering from injuries. Roberts, Ball, Douglas.
I think Cawdor will start to provide some experience, also Dan Davies for a breakdown threat.

Gutted for Elis. Would have loved to see him get a run. Sizable player.

Good experienced pack, but a little inexperienced behind. I’d like to see Badham in the 23. Not used since Glasgow, when he had a good game.

Yes agree, play wings on the wing!

Really not a fan of Johnny, if it wasn’t for the pen we got, he blew that Anderson run at the end with his offload to nowhere. McDonald at 12 could be worth a shot, really wish we could see Price.

If I was an up-and-coming 10, I'd love to have a run out in that team.

With the improved confidence seen in the last 2 games, I feel it is a good environment into which younger less experienced can be introduced.

Having said that, we would have some experience in the backs in JBW, Joe, Tomi and Cawdor if necessary.

Yes, if we’re playing CLJ, I’d like an old head like Cawdor there with him. Great pack.

It looks as if our pack won't be too badly effected by Wales call ups.
Macleod will be a loss, but recently Plumtree has not excelled. In fact I'm not sure he's the right type of player at 6. He does have moments where he shows great skill and imagination, and is a lineout asset. But he's not all that involved in the basics of clearing out to help win/keep the ball after a movement comes to a halt. Too often he's somewhere else waiting to receive the ball and provide the miracle pass. Unfortunately the ball is less likely to come unless he gets stuck in.
As for Johnny Williams, I appreciate his willingness to carry, but first he's got to catch the ball, and then put in a decent pass- two features he's not the best at. But our two obvious 12s are with Wales.

So my 23 would be-

15 - Jac Davies
14 - Iori Badham
13 - Macs Page
12 - Joe Roberts
11 - Tomi Lewis
10 - Carwyn Leggatt Jones
9 - Archie Hughes
8 - Fletcher Anderson
7 - Jarrod Taylor
6 - Max Douglas
5 - Sam Lousi
4 - Jake Ball
3 - Henry Thomas
2 - Marnus Van Der Merwe
1 - Kelmsley Mathias
Bench
16 - Harri Thomas
17 - Alec Hepburn
18 - Archer Holz
19 - Harvey Cuckson
20 - Dan Davis
21 - Gareth Davies
22 - Ioan Nicholas
23 - Johnny Williams

Same team for me except I’d put Taylor at 7 he’s more effective than Dan at the breakdown and he’s more physical. Archie also has to be in the squad. His speed of ball has made a big difference and he’s cleaning up his errors more he plays. If Joe robs injured or even 50/50 macs to 13 and iori to the wing. That back 3 were excellent against Glasgow. JBW is important defensively so needs to start especially with young CLJ inside him.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Sparrow get involved with the first team more. I think he has a higher ceiling than Davis and Taylor.

Nigel is talking about our DNA and part of that is having a "never more than 5 metres from the ball" type flanker. Tiann should be on the bench in Italy.

With out academy players coming though, I’ve felt for a bit that we just needed to weather the WRU poo storm. I hope we are nearly there.

Who plays 10 if CLJ is with Wales U20's ?

Posted By: GPR - Rochester
Date Posted: 26 January 2026 at 7:15am
Injury allowing the team almost picks itself apart from debate around 13 & 7. My biggest concern is who covers 10 on the bench. I would start Cawdor with Carwyn & Johnny outside Carwyn to give him maximum support. Archie on the bench but to come on around 55/60 minutes.

Seems like the perfect time to play Benetton, they have 15 players (not including any injuries) away with the Italy 6N squad. I know we are stretched too, but surely there's a win there for the taking

I would start Dan Davis. We need a someone around the breakdown to steal the ball. I think Taylor may be better than Douglas, both seem to like smashing players but are penalty machines.

I would like to see how many turnovers he’s had in 3-4 years. I’d bet Marnus at hooker is light years ahead of him at open side already.

He’s a semi pro level player, Jarrod Taylor is a much better player.

With RGC.  I watch the SRC highlights every week and everything their backs do comes from him.  He puts his centres into space, his distribution is good.  Also has a decent boot on him.  You can't tell much from brief highlights I know, but he's always the shining light in the bits I've seen.

Thanks for this. Let's hope he can step up. From what I remember of him , he's a neat player and physical enough.  The step up in pace and intensity will be a challenge.
Carwyn, of course faces the same examination

From what I remember of young McBryde, he was a very tidy player with a good boot - the one thing he lacked was pace. If he'd been a bit quicker, he'd have played at a higher level. I think.

Good to hear that.  We need that additional carrying power in the pack, from Ball with losing  Elias to Wales. Ryan has been excellent carrying for us since he's returned.  Douglas will compensate for losing Plumtree's lineout skills.
We need to get Joe Roberts back on the bike.  He's lost a lot of confidence, but he has so much to offer., at his best.

Would probably go Taylor instead of Davis but not a bad team to put out after the international call ups . Looks like CLJ will start and hope he goes well.

Yes Mark I thought that when compiling - helps to have all your 2nd rowd fit which is probably the first time this season. No 7 is a toss up in fairness. Looking forward to seeing CLJ - hope he starts. He is going to make mistakes. Many suggest that he needs SRC minutes but I have no doubt that if he was French he would be in.
