I was aware that, having asked Jacqui Forster to be on "stand by" for w/c 10/04/06, I hadn't phoned her to confirm the postponement. In a rare moment of relaxation and pre-holiday mood, I spoke to her this afternoon. She comes across as a very committed and enthusiastic person, passionate about her role. Anyway, she gave me some info which might be useful.

There's a S.D. conference on Manchester on Saturday 20th of May (open invitation extended to us). Reps from Football, Rugby League and Cricket are attending. They are also trying to encourage Speedway fans to get involved.

Another conference is scheduled for July in Leisester but this is predominantly football.

She's also willing to meet with us as a group to give us some pointers etc. She suggested sometime in June/July and, as she lives in Oxford, she's willing to come as far as Newport.

Regarding our Open Meeting, her opinion was not to hold it close-season. She will attend whenever we schedule it for.

                                                     Any thoughts, bois?

Reply received from Richard Lillicrap.

Next date depends on Swansea’s progression or not into the play-offs.  We understand that success on Saturday would mean I’d be in Swansea on the week end of the 14th.

I’m away on the 21st so the next trip would be either 28th May or 5th June.   So 5th June week-end is the furthest away date I can meet your group and give such advice as I am able.    If all goes well it will be before that!

In the meantime I can ask Jacqui (via this e-mail) to point me to the latest technical advice and ‘must do’ list for the Open Meeting.    The best practice is constantly evolving as more and more clubs go through the process so there is plenty of knowledge and experience ‘out there’ for you to call on.

I will be in touch again next week (probably Tuesday to give myself some time to emerge from the emotional traumas that await this week end) and we can set a firm date then.

Best wishes

Richard

Some further info. from Jacqui Forster.

Barrie,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I am rather up against it regarding the North West conference as I have an awful lot to do yet and only days left now to do it all in, plus my brother has gone and had a big birthday, so I'm off to East Anglia in a few minutes which I could really have done without.

I think the basis of organising an open meeting is in the SD handbook.  The thing I would most alter about that is having the break before the vote.  Don't do it!  At a few of these meetings which I've been to, the audience, confident that there will be a positive vote, go to the loo, the bar and go home!  I've been involved in hauling people back into the room to ensure a representative vote!

Get an independant Chair, someone who is not involved in the working group and preferably someone who the audience know and who is a good chair (can keep order), someone like a radio presenter.  It would be good to invite a couple of existing supporters trusts along to speak about how it works for them, the obvious one would be Cardiff but why not Merthyr Tydfil football supporters trust, they are well organised and do a lot in their local community, thier Chair is the International officer at the FAW, so he knows his stuff.

The Chair should explain what the meeting is all about and run through a programme of who is speaking and what will happen, so if you have the SD person first, followed by one or two supporters trusts (no more than 2 - remember people's attention span!), then somone from your working group to put an idea of how it could work at Llanelli Scarlets, followed by questions, then the vote, then remind people of the attendance list which asked people to tick if they want to get involved in setting the trust up, many who were reticent at the beginning of the meeting will have been so moved by the emotion of the meeting, will definately want to get involved.  You might not need everyone who volunteers but remember that you will get a lot of people drop out of the process and the numbers will dwindle very quickly.

Moving on, after the positive vote (!) your working group should meet regularly and be divided into sub-groups working on the different aspects of setting the trust up, the website, the membership package, the name, the logo, the Rules, fundraising initiatives, work with the local community, liaison with the Council etc. etc.  I would recommend also regular general meetings to put the proposals worked on by those sub-groups to the general fanbase to achieve their approval, don't worry, as if people have worked hard and done things, the fnas are not likely to oppose their hard work.

Once I've got the Manchester conference out of the way and before I start the hard work on the Leicester one (15th July), I can spend a bit more time with you.  Let me know your proposed date for the open meeting and keep me up to date and I'll see what I can do.

Kind regards

Jacqui

He's also an Osprey/Neefer unfortunatley. If we can't get PhilBB to do it then the Martyrs supporters trust could be a good idea.

Or even both. Certainly would'nt do any harm to have more than one perspective. However, my only worry about Phil is that the Blues trust seems to be a little too 'anti' in their dealings with the club if what I hear is right. Is that true,? or am I getting the wrong vibes.

I think you're right, Dorian, but Phil is OK [online persona aside] and he can give some examples of positive acts carried out by the ST.  I'm sure if we brief him properly, he'll sing the right tune for us.

Not doubting Phil's integrity at all, and although he can sometimes apppear abrasive online, his comments are usually constructive, so I've no qualms on that score. What would worry me is that our managemwnt might already be aware of the situation with regards the Blues Trust, and be wary because of that. -Just a thought.
