Yesterday, I watched (in between quite a lot of rugby) some of the Tour of Flanders - one of the five so-called 'Monuments' in one-day cycle races... it is exceptionally tough - long and with several steep climbs up cobbled roads. It was won by the generational talent Tadej Pogacar... I don't think there has been such an outstanding cyclist since Eddy Merckx.
From the BBC report: "Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar won the Tour of Flanders to become the first male cyclist since 1975 to win both the prestigious one-day race and the Tour de France. Pogacar is the third Tour winner to triumph in Flanders after France's Louison Bobet (1955) and Belgian great Eddy Merckx (1975). "It was amazing. It's a day I'll never forget," said 24-year-old Pogacar. It is his third victory in one of the the five Monument one-day races. Pogacar has previously won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro di Lombardia." In this race, at one point Pogacar was riding in company with his two main rivals - both exceptionally strong - Mathieu van der Poel (who won Milan - San Remo a fortnight ago) and Wout van Aert. Pog knew he'd be out-sprinted by either of these two if they finished together, so he simply rode away from them up one of the cobbled climbs, first dropping van Aert and finally VDP. Neither man could get back to him on the flatter sections. Total dominance - and he's only 24!!!

This summer’s grand tours should be excellent, with more at the top of the tree. Last year’s Vingegaard:Roglic tag team assault on Pog lives long in the memory.
If they try it again, maybe Pog will be that bit wiser and cope better. However, it’s a different matter if both Rog & Ving are equal threats to him.

Pogacar is amazing - to have such a palmares at only 24!
He said after the race that if he retired immediately, he'd be pleased with his achievements.
