Snooker great and Llanelli legend Terry Griffiths has just passed away. From the BBC report:
His son Wayne wrote on Facebook: "To our friends and snooker followers in general, we are deeply saddened to share the news of our loss. "Terry Griffiths OBE passed away peacefully on 1st December, after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was surrounded by his family in his beloved hometown in South Wales. "A proud Welshman, Terry was born in Llanelli, brought pride to Llanelli and now he has found peace in Llanelli. He would not have had it any other way." |

Lovely tribute from Wayne, on an incredibly sad day for Llanelli, Wales and snooker. So many lovely tributes to Terry, as a player and more recently a respected coach. He always remained an incredibly down to earth Llanelli boy! I am sad to hear he suffered with dementia, a form of which my wife suffers from. We are left however, with wonderful memories. Some years ago I met him in Cowell Street, and was able to tell him that his inspiration and achievements went well beyond snooker. In 1979, I travelled from Brighton to Bournemouth, for my first major job interview. I had allready been unsuccessful a few few times, and was incredibly nervous. Not only this , I quickly realised the calibre of people I had against me. At the time of the interview, Terry was playing Dennis Taylor in the final of the world snooker tournament, and I had followed his progress all the way. Terry , an ordinarily Llanelli boy winning , incredibly gave me the confidence to think..." yeah maybe I can do something too' I got the job...and a thirty odd year career followed. Terry laughed, when I told him, and we shook hands. Diolch Terry, rest in peace, you have brought honour to this town, and you will never be forgotten |

Remember Terry as a young affable Bus Conductor on my school bus with one of those fascinating old ticket machines they used to carry and when you could jump on and off the bus when moving! He was a leading amateur player back then but went on to greater things of course, as a player and coach.

Great bloke, Terry's brother and my dad were best men at each other wedding and he used to put up with our appalling snooker skills up at his snooker hall when I came home on leave. We had some great times there with Terry shaking his head at our ability (or lack of), sadly he and my dad have both succumbed to Dementia two more welsh internationals gone from Llanelli.

Such awfully sad news, a real gentleman. My father remembers him being a postman and when delivering mail to the Firestone Tyre and Auto in Murray Street that my father managed in the 70s, he would stop for a while and chat about his snooker and how he would be world champion one day. I also remember seeing Terry many times in his car, always a BMW - 6 TMG. He would stop in the layby near Ross sometimes and have a bite to eat with all the commercial drivers and chat about the game. He was a man of the people, always. RIP.
