I believe the crux of the issue is what outcomes we both want from the game day experience...I  want a better level or standard of player playing week in week out , this player will hopefully take those you aquired skills to the international team , thus making cymru a world class team ..You want to have a better day out predominantly, ignoring to an extent the quality of the game
..That's fine , but it's not my current view point

I obviously want quality rugby and quality players as well as the other stuff but that's moving the debate on a bit, I was just pointing out that there is more than hot air to justify joining the English league, I personally think the standard in the premiership is overrated, but their clubs win more trophies when it comes to cross league competition, no amount of debate changes that.

We also need to find ways to reduce costs outside of cutting the player budget and joining the English league helps there.

As I've pointed out , I believe that the URC is the better league going forward for us to compete in ...I also feel the English league have major issues with finance and the contilnuity of existence ..We have our own problems and jumping into a sinking boat is definitely the wrong way to go

Good debate though

Interesting debate well presented by both of you fair play. As someone who watches more Premiership rugby than URC I would point out that the watching experience presented by BT Sport is light years ahead of the absolute junk provided by viaplay. I say this based on two years prior to this season when I cancelled my membership.

Rugby for me is a form of entertainment. The way it is presented matters. One of the very interesting facts provided above is the average attendances. URC at 10000 is skewed by the Irish trio of Leinster, Munster & Ulster whereas the South African teams also swell those numbers. The reality is the Welsh regions average is probably 6-7000 so can you imagine what another 5000 would do for our finances.

I can see the argument for players benefitting from exposure to different styles, climates, tactics etc. but there's so many variables in international teams success that gearing club rugby too much towards international rugby is something I'm wholly against.

I can appreciate great athletes, high skill, great tactics and coaching but sport is more than that for me, it's about the battle, the result, the despair and joy. I can watch an awful quality top 14 game but the result is so important to the teams that it's more engaging to me than say the world 15 and BaaBaas game.

I supported Glaws for 35+ seasons before moving down.  There is no doubt that the greater match day experience is at Glaws.  12000 would be a poor crowd for a league match.   Scarlets can only dream of those numbers.  Yes it’s much more expensive at Glaws.  At least a third more than scarlets. But if we want bigger crowds and better match day atmosphere then it’s Anglo welsh league for me.  We can journey to the others in the European matches

I agree the emotional attachment is massive , so is the packaging of the event and how it's presented on the media and especially TV ..I watch URC rugby mainly on South African sport as the analysis is brilliant .Sky used to be able to talk up a football game between portvale and Cirencester into a match comparible with inter Milan v Barcelona ...Between the 3 of us , we have 3 different view points, each valid in its own right ....I think a final outcome would have to be a Mish mash of all three viewpoints , but I think we could then have a debate regarding what had been omitted ....Maybe ultimately it's the passion that drives us to post multiple posts on the subject ...
Either way I know I'm right so that the end of it WinkLOL

Yeah I read that too. Even the teams in French D2 have huge operating budgets (taken from another forum so may be with a pinch of salt):

Club                      2022/23 Budget
FC Grenoble Rugby 13,480 M€
SU Agen                13,079 M€
USON Nevers        12,551 M€
RC Vannes                12,052 M€
Provence Rugby        11,599 M€
Oyonnax Rugby        11,223 M€
US Montalbanaise 10,761 M€
Biarritz Olympique 10,202 M€
US Colomiers          8,559 M€
AS Béziers Hérault  8,094 M€
Mont de Marsans  7,777 M€
Rouen Normandie    7,386 M€
Soyaux Angoulême  6,676 M€
Stade Aurillacois  5,964 M€
US Carcassonne          5,952 M€

Thanks for posting this FS.

Mont de Marsan did brilliantly to come a hair’s breadth from second and a hope semi final - they lost to the bottom side away when sending too young a side having rested the mainstays. There were other reasons too but that’s life and still doesn’t detract from superb value for money.

The side I think I saw mentioned in relation to Francis was Montauban.

Any more news re Sione and whether his Vannes deal is definitely off?
Way off with my Montauban recollection. It’s Provence and that’s a large number of kilometres about 450kms to the east of Montauban - north of Toulouse and a fork in the autoroutes north to Brive or north west to Bordeaux. Provence is pretty close to Marseilles, relatively.

The crisis at London Irish deepened on Friday after HM Revenue and Customs filed winding-up petitions against the Gallagher Premiership club over an unpaid tax bill believed to be up to £1 million.

Insolvency proceedings were launched in the high court with petitions filed against London Irish Holdings Ltd and London Irish Rugby Football Ground Ltd.

Worcester Warriors and Wasps both went into administration during the 2022-23 season after being served winding-up petitions by HMRC.

London Irish are already in a battle for their survival and have been given a final deadline of 4pm next Tuesday to prove their financial security to the RFU or be suspended from the English league system.
