Some mature comments to it on the website to be fair. No pathetic infantile swearing.

I am really struggling to find something which would class as an exceptional circumstance - maybe the Russians landing 100,000 troops on Poppet Sands in Cardigan would suffice.

A rare and refreshing full frontal assault by the Welsh media on the WRU.

These people have no shame they will enjoy the hotel their freebies and tickets while the regions that supply the players for their junkets are dying.

It’s really come to the fore this week.
Chris Jones made good points on the Rugby Union Weekly, Bernard Jackman making clear points on the Scrum V podcast. On the question of “does Wales have the resources for 4 pro sides” they go around in circles. But I think it’s clear, Wales doesn’t have the money for competitive 4 pro sides, but wales definitely does have the talent for 4 pro sides. If you compare the number of Irish pros playing outside of Ireland compared to Welsh players playing outside of Wales In recent years Bierne, Sexton, Zebo, Sean O’Brien are 4 Lions tourists who have played outside Ireland since 2013. All of them for 3 years or fewer. In contrast Wales have had LRZ, Biggar, Webb, Moriarty, Adams, Liam Williams, Cuthbert, Foxy, Faletau and Jamie Roberts in the same period. This is obviously a fairly muddled way of looking at it, but at the slightly lower level - international standard players - Wales have had too many to name, I don’t think that’s the case for Ireland. I can only really name Donnaca Ryan and Paddy Jackson. There are 3 equivalent Welsh players at Bristol alone in Sheedy, Lloyd, Thomas… The reason is Ireland can afford to keep them there by paying competitive salaries. If the Welsh regions had the cash to keep these players in Wales there would be a very different state of affairs.

It might be clear that the WRU cannot or will not 'afford' 4 sides, but it is by no means clear, that Wales cannot. The point is that we do not know how viable the pro game is,or can be.The 4 sides are prevented from operating as independent businesses because of the WRU..At present they do not operate in a free market.Until the pro clubs are allowed to run the pro game,we simply do not know how successful they could be.Cut the pro clubs loose, let them control their own destiny-far better to see them sink or swim on their own terms, when acting in their own interests, than to go along with a WRU sponsored race to the bottom.

Spot on Dic. Interesting comments by Ryan & Young in the last few days. Young hit the nail on the head really - all that matters is team Wales. Since he has been back the vast majority of questions he faces are about players and their fitness or ability to play for Wales. He, like me, believes that until the demise in Welsh rugby being suffered by the regions spreads to the National side nothing will be done.
This demise could well be about to happen at this 6 nations but Pivac has already got his reasons for failure inked in - injuries to frontline test players ( most of whom are 33+ & many of whom would not make our first 15 now anyway). He also made an interesting comparison to how the IRFU fund their provinces & grass roots game.

Covid has really killed us sadly and our overlords are trying to snake their way out of helping us. The wru hotel and other unaffordable projects are another nail in the coffin plus the rather mysterious and sudden cash injection at cardiff plus the fact the wru has now committed to paying a squad of welsh women players, means they will have to cut their cloth. Atm that looks like us. Could well be in another fight for mere survival here.

Any idea how the Hotel is going? Bad timing with Covid although they will have had government grants I assume?Obviously having committed to it, I want it to be a huge success as it is such a big investment of our future funding but who knows

No idea if its turning any profits yet but the building is absolutely spectacular, this is luxury hotelling for the elite spenders mainly...Or for others to be king and queen for a night lol Its a joint collaboration between wru and celtic connections who wun celtic manor...Nice to see the old building restored though and if it creates 100s of jobs and brings much needed money into the coffers of welsh rugby all good. But lets hope its shared out fairly
Prices are pretty exorbitant ....Theyre charging £341 b and b for 1 person on feb 11th the night before scotland game, the 12th is £546 for b and b , £631 for dinner plus b and b per person
Other days are usually £109 unless weekend or special event days , 4th 5th irish game away is £162 and £199 Edited by roy munster - 26 January 2022 at 10:52am |
