Big date for your diaries folks. Llanelli RFC take on old rivals Pontypool RFC in the WRU National cup on Saturday 28 January at Parc Y Scarlets. Pontypool are flying high in their league and will definitely be up for this game and no doubt fancy their chances in a cup knock out against us. Should be a big Pontypool contingent and plenty of atmosphere in the Llanelli RFC 'Clubhouse' at the Quinnell lounge and especially on the field. I understood it was a 3pm KO . Should be a highly competitive Welsh derby and the more Llanelli support the better!

It's unfortunate that the cup now always clashes with the AW which does such a lot of talent out of the RFC. I will be there anyway to give the boys some support. The days of Llanelli RFC being cup kings seem a very very long time ago.

Well it's match day and the big East v West Welsh Cup game KO at 3pm. Should be decent crowd and feisty derby. Come and support your Llanelli town team.

I'm going to watch this on TV. As you say, the team would no doubt have been stronger but for the AW cup last night. I wonder, therefore, where the players are in the pecking order - would most of these guys be sort of 5th or 6th choices for the Scarlets? More important, though - are any of them either youngsters who may break through to the Scarlets team, or even late developers to keep an eye on?

3-8 HT. Scrum good, line out not bad, backs look lively, if a little lateral. Ponty, well organised in defence forcing the lateral play, and aggresive at the breakdown. Most of the territory and posession to Llanelli.
Rhodri Cole at 9 has provided quick ball, varied the play with inside passes and made a few line breaks. Their territorial kicking has been superior. Although score flatters them a bit. |

11-11. Lost both 10's! No. 12 out sparko, alright now. Two Ponty back rowers gave immediate first aid. Really good to see.

19.11 final score. Pontypool first ever victory over Llanelli in the cup. Pontypool deserved the victory but Llanelli showed great tenacity in defence against a heavier bigger side.

FT 11-19. Beaten by a very physical side, but stood up very well. Dominated the scrum, ref didn't give Llanelli much though. Gardiner needs to shed 3 stone, but scrumages well. No.9 Cole looks promising.
A very young side that didn't role over. Edited by surfing-mtber - 28 January 2017 at 4:53pm |
