Stand up for the Scarlets

Stand up for the Scarlets

Following recent reports that local residents opposed to the redevelopment plans for Stradey intend to petition the Welsh Assembly to ‘call in’ those plans, we feel that we, as supporters of the Scarlets, should now make our voices heard.

At a recent meeting th objectors set out their stall in no uncertain terms.

“Straight opposition, not damage limitation
Clear view from meeting to oppose development in its entirety and not talk about damage limitation such as a road directly onto roundabout / tewer houses etc”.

The objectors may sneer at the Scarlets debt, and conveniently ignore the fact that such debts are endemic at modern professional rugby clubs, some with far greater sources of income - yet their own fag packet strategy for the redevelopment of Strade fails to account for the huge loss in revenue which would be incurred whilst this redevelopment took place. It also makes a mockery of the hard work and meticulous planning that has already gone into the proposed plans.

None of us want to leave Stradey park, yet most supporters have realised that if professional rugby is to continue in this area, we have to move on.

The stark choice is clear, we move now or fade away later.

Our elected Assembly Member and Member of Parliament should also consider that by supporting these objections they are endangering considerably more than the existence of a rugby club.
The Scarlets are to Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and a large part of the Welsh speaking community, a cultural focal point that expresses more than mere sporting identity.

Lose this focal point and we lose another unquantifiable quality that makes the area a worthwhile place to grow up in, work in, and invest in.

Claims by one objector that the ‘whole town was in uproar over the proposals’ need to be scrutinised and now is the time that the hitherto silent majority should stand up and be counted if they truly care about the future sustainability of The Scarlets.

Please take the time to sign our online petition.

Edit - fixed it now. Diolch Karl. (ursa)

That's great, Gar.  I think that calling the opponents' strategy "fag packet" is being rather kind; it implies that there is one [poor] strategy instead of a patchwork of half a dozen or more, all equally half-baked.  I don't think it needs changing, though.

Thanks Bob, have tweaked it a bit again..

How about this for the actual petition heading? Feel free to edit etc.
Not exactly sure who to 'aim' it at, the Council or the Assembly?

"We the undersigned urge those concerned to support the proposed redevelopment of Stradey Park as outlined by the joint venture between the Llanelli Scarlets and ***??. As a vital part of the proposed new stadium development at Trostre, we believe that this development is pivotal to the survival of more than just a rugby region, but a  focal point in the sporting and cultural life of our community. We therefore urge you to support these proposals."
