Typical bland, grey, beige, Gatland squad

Won't be any ambition to play any rugby, just to strangle other teams to death.

Big congratulations to Adam Beard on being selected. The first ever Welsh player to make a squad based on an ability to point at rucks, and miss every attempted charge down of box kicks. Outstanding.

I'm bored already

I assume you can replace a player with a fresh injury that occurs after the start of the tournament but can you replace a player with a pre-existing injury (Faletau, Jenkins, Elias etc, etc......)

I don't disagree with too many of those selections, TBH - it just seems to me that in some positions players have been selected because we lack strength in depth in those positions. Specifically:

Beard - big useless lump - would never have been picked after that second England game but for a lack of experienced and powerful alternatives. Can't call or win lineouts; trundles about in the loose. Does he push in the scrum? If so, that at least would be a positive.

Dillon Lewis - experienced, can do a job in the loose but not the guy you want against a big, strong scrum

Most of the back row, selected because of injuries and retirements IMO: Lydiate showed little or nothing v SA; Reffell has had one good game for Wales, but otherwise has failed to reproduce club form; Tshiunza the same - anonymous in warm-ups; Wainwright - one good game, one not good. Jac Morgan a top man and deserves to be co-captain. It's bizarre - a year or so ago, we had so many great back row players, but injuries and retirements have shredded the quality available.

Tompkins - chosen for experience and because we seem to have far more players who play 13 than 12 at present. Maybe for the future Gatland should consider getting Grady to move to 12, if he has the skill set. (Others more expert than I might have a word about who is our best bet from the current crop.)

I am delighted that both Halfpenny and Sanjay have been picked. You need one top class kicker in each game, and if Biggar is rested or not fit then it has to be Halfpenny.

No other moans about the squad - coaches doing the best with what they have got to pick from.

I read somewhere that the squads don't have to be officially presented to the RWC until 1 September, so until then I assume it is perfectly OK to swap someone who fails to recover from injury, or who picks up a new one.

Can only hope Beard gets a paper cut on the finger he uses to point with at rucks then

Joe Roberts pays (an unfair) price for having one too many 13's to choose from and being considered to be carrying a knee having missed some camp time.
Grady has done nothing to be selected in front of him, other then he has some experience in the wing.

Selecting 2 scrum halves (not 3) suggests that Anscombe has come in to the reckoning because of injury / knocks to Biggar and Sanjay, and Halfpenny hasn't a great track record of late.

Henry Thomas for Asaratti is understandable but he got a fearful bullying in the scrum last weekend.

All in all I feel mostly for Joe and Rhys Davies...albeit I suspect we will see them at some point.

Some good points made above.
Regarding |Scarlets , you have to have sympathy for joe Roberts and Kemsley Matthias, whose time for Wales will surely come again. Kieran hardy's form overall last season, was not consistent, but he is young enough to bounce back.
Gatalnd , after losing a batch of experienced players to retirement and injury, has gone for experience, and one can understand that.
Gambles over the fitness however, of far too many players travelling is disconcerting

All that matter initially is beating Fiji in that first game, when I think Gatland will pick..
(injury permitting)............Sanjay, LRZ, North, Tomkins, Adams, Biggar, Williams, G Thomas, Elias, Francis, Rowlands, Jenkins, wainwright,Falataeu, Morgan (capt)

Time will tell but it feels like the other nations have been a bit smarter in who they've played in their warm up games and how they've used the games.

Fiji historically haven't had much time together so have gotten a load of games in recent months including Australia A who you'd imagine will play similar to Australia first team and they've played a French team who went after them in defence, kicking and set piece which is what Wales and Georgia will look to do against them. They've also had a week in France to get used to things.

Australia have had some proper tough tests and given their youngsters loads of game time and are playing in France this weekend.

Wales on the other hand have played teams that play nothing like Fiji or Australia and haven't given a near first team a proper run out.

It may be holding things back, but for me it feels very risky hoping it'll all click in a very big game 1.
