THE INCIDENT

Rovigo – It wasn’t enough that they disrupted with loud shouts and bad behavior the entire evening for the audience at Voices for Freedom, one of the final events of the Polesine Pride organized by Arcigay. They even got on stage, ignoring every boundary of common decency. The absurd scene occurred Saturday night in Piazza Matteotti, and the protagonists were a group of under-20 players from the Welsh national rugby team, who are staying in the area for the World Rugby U20 Championship.

At first, they were stopped by festival staff and security. One of them even grabbed the microphone from actress Silvia Ferreri (on stage with journalist Tiziana Ferrario and politician Michela Marzano) to shout incomprehensible phrases. No one was hurt. There was no physical violence. But their disruptive behavior ruined a peaceful event and is now under investigation by law enforcement.

The same group, according to eyewitnesses, also caused damage to the Capital hotel, where they are staying in Rovigo, breaking furniture and disturbing guests. When contacted, the hotel management preferred not to comment.

POOR BEHAVIOR

On Saturday evening, a few hours before the incident in Piazza Matteotti, they were already the subject of complaints in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, where they were seen intoxicated and wandering aimlessly. They seemed to be completely unaware of where they were or how to get back to their hotel.

Residents report that they were confused, asking for directions, shouting, and urinating on walls. At one point, they tried to enter the Monalisa Lounge Bar, but were denied access. Shortly after, they headed towards Via Badaloni, where they began knocking over signs and furniture from restaurants and bars.

One man was caught in photos swinging a large street sign, another was seen toppling chairs and bins.

JUMPING ON STAGE

Martina Attili, from the band Suspension of Judgment, was performing on stage when one of the Welsh players jumped up and interrupted the performance. He then stood awkwardly at the back of the stage as if nothing was wrong. The event’s MC, actor Michele Lionello, had to step in and take the microphone back, urging the player to leave.

Soon, others in the group began shouting from the audience. At that point, the carabinieri (Italian military police) tried to intervene but struggled to calm the situation. The players ignored orders and continued behaving in a disorderly manner, preventing the police from doing their job.

In fact, some officers had to be pulled from another assignment — securing the scene of a homicide that happened earlier in the day in Boara — just to deal with the rugby players.

THE HOTEL

At Hotel Capital, damage is still being assessed. Management has confirmed that furniture and objects in the rooms and common areas were broken or moved. No official complaint has yet been filed, but if the situation worsens, it’s likely to become a legal matter.

Arcigay organizers and city officials expressed dismay at the behavior, particularly as it occurred during an event meant to promote respect, dialogue, and inclusion.

THE MANIFESTATION

Voices for Freedom is a long-standing festival of music and civil rights organized by Arcigay Rovigo. This year’s edition included artists and speakers like Ferreri, Ferrario, and Marzano. Other performances came from Martina Attili, Leo Miglioranza, and bands like Amarcord, Zagreo, Numa, and Atarassia. The festival was also a tribute to Monica Lovari.
shame they didn’t show so much agression and fight on the pitch, bad show suggests lack of respect for hosts and management

Agreed, someone on Gwlad has said the Italian RFU have paid the damages whilst the WRU have stumped up nothing.

Don’t think the management of that side will be welcoming the scrutiny when the enquiries begin back home.

Something wrong with the culture.

Buck stops with the coach & captain. Don't know if playing for 20's attracts a payment, if so that should be withheld until the culprits are identified & punished which should include cooperating with the Italian police if they wish to make charges.

I agree the absolute farce since these jokers took over is astonishing.
Can anything else go wrong can they cock anything else up.
Will they start talking to each other as they clearly don’t with the mixed messages they come out with
