As an ex forward(started in the back row and migrated forward as I got slower)I actually see the scrum as a huge part of the game. I don't see it as a method of restarting the game any more than a line out is a complicated throw in. Yes the girls running about is easy to follow, but it aint rugby any more than the Northern league is(that's a sort of hand ball with falling over).
The "hit" has removed a certain amount of skill in the scrum and the squint put in has removed the interest of hooking, a ball against the head was something to relish. Line outs with lifting has removed a lot of the competition in it, the law changes are adding to the sterility in the game. I'm old enough to remember footrushes as well as jinking half backs and all were just as exciting. I like the pro game, but we do need the officials to be consistent and more anonymous, too many think they are the stars of the game and they are not.
