Oh! It's another man!

Scotland is all set to introduce gay marriage:

Right then: what are people's views on this?

I will state, categorically, that I think this is great, mainly because it pisses people off, but I also think that a nation's attitude towards homosexuality is an interesting indication of how developed that society is; how accepting it is. If you disagree, I would be interested to hear your logic why, particularly developing the "God hates fags" (and so on) viewpoint of conservative religious types (I acknowledge I have my own prejudices by the way!).

And do people think gays should be allowed in the military?

Please feel free to add other talking points....

No ones is going to post they disagree because they'll be seen as homophobic.

Yeah, possibly - which I think would be a positive indication of how times have changed - but it could also turn into a discussion about the significance of marriage and what that means, for example.

Feel free to delete the thread if you don't think it will go anywhere. I was genuinely interested in debate, which includes both sides of the argument (because there are definitely two sides here).

Well what a statement ..Homophobic Bashing...a frase that was twisted not so long ago by certain people on here who wanted to see the back of me for good.....Its pretty ironic that im probably a lot more open minded than most ...and not just sexual orientation but in general life choices ...i would even employ Fred West cos i thought he was damn good in laying patios.....Its a cracking question professor , but i feel most on here will have difficulty in answering your question due to many reason s..but perhaps because certain doors are creaking open ...But if that did happen , it wouldnt matter an iota to me eithet way
Maybe the standing judge and jury are the ones with the real problems

Marriage isn't important to people as much as it was. Plenty of couples lead unmarried lives quite happily.

Will decide a US presidential election or two in the future...

Come to think of it, when do you think there'll be the first [admittedly] gay UK Prime Minister or US President?

It's quite amazing in our lifetime we've seen a mixed-race President, if you think about it. Truly monumental stuff, albeit superficial.

It should probably be deleted or locked. I was just interested into people's views but you're right, I can only see it going downhill.

It shouldn't be locked or deleted, and if it goes downhill then i'd be interested to see who drags it there.

Implying that anyone who does not agree with or who is even offended by the act of male buggery is therefore a redneck God-bothering "Conservative" is a bit naive at best. I thought you were better than that, mate.

I work in an industry full of staunch socialist unionists. Please feel free to come and canvass their opinion on homosexuality.

Sorry, i was intending that part to be slightly tongue-in-cheek - those types could be against it but i don't think it follows all against are in that category. Pretty liberal people can express strong views on issues as well and i was simply interested as to what those were and, ultimately, if people care or not.

I still don't really understand your last statement - I'm not trying to be prejudiced in my own views about who is for or against gay marriage, this is part of why I started the thread in the first place (albeit I was being somewhat confrontational in the manner I did and was making a reference to that extreme US church - again, I'm sorry if this caused offence).

I'm under the impression no one in the UK really cares any more but i know from others' experiences there are still hostilities sometimes.

As sa14 points out, it's hard for people against to post their views so it was a badly-judged topic which i created.

But questions like "what does marriage even mean these days?" could well be asked. I'm not sure how much value i place on it, as such commitments are more personal rather than official, but that's the point: it's a very personal thing and there are numerous viewpoints.

The legal evolution of marriage is quite interesting, perhaps that was what i was aiming to get at (but who knows? ).

The worrying fact that no footballer dares come out suggests homophobic attitudes may be more widespread than you think. Although this is in contrast to how well received Gareth Thomas and Nigel Owens' sexuality have been received and treated in a grown up way. Civil partnerships and now marriage is definitely the right step forward for full acceptance but i do feel we are a long way off.
