Hello Kid A.
I love a pontificate and a chat / squabble about music. I was wondering what was the reason for you having such strong opinions about queen? I was also wondering what sort of music you enjoy listening to?

Alright Cyril. I also love a chat, especially about music, film, etc

I tend to have strong opinions on things that are overrated and underrated. Especially things that are overrated that I can't get away from.

Queen, whilst being an important rock band with a pretty good frontman, are just that.

Secondly, their songs are largely "fun". Whilst I'm a big fan of being happy, especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays, I tend to want music to be a bit cleverer than what Queen have to offer. (All they really are is the thinking man's Darkness) Now granted, I'm no expert on the band because, like you've alluded to, I have heard mostly their more well known numbers. But I would have though that this little taster would represent the majority of their music no?

Lastly, as for what music I'm into, well these days I'm open to listening to most types of music, especially liking a bit of post rock, modern classical and the odd bit of rock.

At what?

It takes all sorts. The Beatles definitely did alot of rubbish.

I do like mainstream stuff by the way. I don't know where this notion of me only liking music nobody has heard of comes from Mr SmellyMike....

The Cure have done 13 studio albums by the way. Death Cab for Cutie have released 7 albums. Sigur Ros have done 5. Beth Orton's done 5. Nick Cave has released 14.

There's some of my favourite "well known" artists ^ right there

Queen are not fit to lace their boots ;)

Queen are just average. They never actually made a good album either did they? They were a singles band, much like the old soul singers of the 60s, Sam Cooke, Ben E. King - writing catchy 'hits' that were fun and appealed to the record buying masses, but if you go behind that there was very little substance.

They sounded great, very polished and Freddy had a great voice and delivery. But they were an arena rock band in an era of arena rock. Overblown, over the top show-men (well, Mercury was anyway).

Being 'big' and 'popular' never made anyone a good band. Pavement, The Modern lovers, Guided by Voices - amazing music, not necessarily popular. Queen average music, incredibly and inexplicbly popular.
If you're losing your soul and you know it, then you've still got a soul left to lose.

If queen were so bad, how does their music still sell 40 years after they were formed and 20 years after the death of Freddie Mercury...

My 7 year old daughter knows the words to we are the champions and we will rock you. that had nothing to do with me, but she picked them up on the radio...

The Cure I can agree with, but to just say Queen are over-rated and over popular is a joke.

they have influenced many big acts, current and passed....

So anything that sells = good?

Mr Blobby got to UK number one you know.

Quote they have influenced many big acts, current and passed....

Being influential doesn't make it good. Otherwise we'd all be raving about Gregorian chants made by Monks centuries ago.

Queen's albums up to and including "Jazz" ('79?) were full of hidden gems to be fair, their second is prog-rock tour de force:) After that they went artistically questionable but remained a cracking live band, though on a downward slide until Live Aid when like them or not they fully realised the idea of the "global jukebox", and proceeded to throw the hits out thus establishing a return to popularity. I find it interesting they never really explained away their decision to play Sun City at the height of apartheid, but I suppose the money was good;) "Live Killers" is a good album to own if you only want the one.

I won't go into the stuff I like, far too eclectic. I'm listening to the Grateful Dead at the moment, finger on the pulse of the nation me!

Queen II is without doubt a masterpiece, the hidden gem of their collection...

It really is quite astonishing how you actually came to form that point of view. And then wrote it down.
