Who's idea was it to give Hamer Webb a cap?

For me that was down to Botham, who was standing in that corner but with his back to play! Hamer Webb had been chasing the penalty kick so had to return from under Scotlands posts. Possibly Jarrod or LRZ should have supported Botham. However because he had his back to play, Botham didnt see the ball until it was in Graham’s hands. If Botham hadnt have been dozing he would have caught the kick, it landed a few yards from him, and the try would have been prevented.

Overall, I asked for players to look for contact first and to pass as a second option. And mostly I got it (quite a few times I saw forwards catch the ball, automatically look to pass and then remember they were actually forwards and see contact). We have always looked good doing that.

I asked for better lineouts. I think we were 100% over 13 lineouts? That’s incredible considering the darts were from lake and, hate to admit it because I love him, Elias, who have both struggled on occasions with this

I asked for us to take the points whenever they were on offer. We did.

I asked for less penalties. There were less penalties my a big margin overall. Shame we conceded 4 in the last 10 mins but…

Overall, I have to be happy with that because everything I wanted from them, Tandy and his team delivered. I didn’t expect a win pre-game so the defeat doesn’t sting so much.

That should have been a win though. 3 things lost that game.

Sam going off injured. Metronomic from the tee, Solid and aggressive in defence, had an outstanding game that even the English commentators were giving credit to him for. Evans had better length on his kicks, but our defence was noticeably weaker and the attack became disjointed.

Tomos Williams. He had a brilliant game, all the way until hebloody croc rolled a Scotland player in front of the ref  WHILST WE WERE PLAYING BLOODY ADVANTAGE and he didn’t even need to be in bloody contact!!!!!  That was an easy 3 points under the sticks, game goes back to 7 points. We get the ball back.

And…well. The Botham brainfart. Several players should have been alert to it, it’s inexcusable- but you have to credit Russell with the vision and ability to not only spot the opportunity but to execute it too. I thought that kick was going dead when he hit it. Fair play Russell - without him Scotland would have got nothing. He went from ordinary to world class about the 50th minute.

Lastly, no Adam beard and we looked miles better for it.

After getting pumped 2 weeks in a row, that was a great upturn in effort. Now  I I don’t care if James and Hawkins is the best centre partnership etc, I think you’ve just got to keep playing them for the next 2 games so we have consistency. James looked like a proper test player yesterday, not just a talent. 3 games in a row at the top level in the same position will do that. I almost spilled my drink every time he drove through 3 defenders.

Ireland have been Jekyll and Hyde recently. I don’t think we’ll get a win from that one, but I think it will be close, and I reckon a win vs Italy is on the cards because this team finally looks up for it.

I wasn’t a fan of Tandy getting the job, I don’t think he’s the guy, BUT to go from the first game to the third game and see that improvements are being made is encouraging. Without sam pulling the strings our attack faltered, but the defence was miles better, so too physicality, discipline, set piece etc. one swallow does not a summer make, but I’m prepared to eat my words if Tandy can get us 3/5 wins next year in the 6N

Stupid question here that I don't know the answer to, that someone might be able to.

So, Jarrod Evans just kicks our penalty for 3 points yeah.....all good. All our players are trotting back to our half post 3 points conversion, including the Scottish lads to restart the game from the half way.

During this period, and whilst everyone is running back, a ball boy runs onto the pitch from the half way line to place a ball on the half way spot.
This isn't the same ball that was converted by Jarrod. Yet, the ball that was placed on the half way is the ball that Finn used for a quick kick-off that caught everyone napping.

So the question is, unless the ball that Jarrod used to to successfully kick our penalty was defective after that conversion, then shouldn't the same ball have been used at the restart?

Looking at the rules, I thought that you are generally required to use the same match ball that was in play, to say score a try, and then a conversation, and then at the restart?
This is what Gemini has to say:

Under World Rugby Law 2, while the ball used for a kick at goal (conversion or penalty) must be the one that was in play at the time, there is no requirement to use that exact same ball for the subsequent kickoff.

Here is the breakdown of how this works in practice and in the law:

1. The "One Ball" Rule for Kicking at Goal

Law 8.8 (for conversions) and Law 8.22 (for penalty goals) state that the kicker must use the ball that was in play unless it is defective. This prevents players from swapping in a "special" kicking ball that might be drier or pumped to a specific pressure just for the shot.

2. The Restart (The Kickoff)

Once the goal is kicked (or missed and goes dead), that phase of play is over. For the restart:

  • The "Ball Person" factor: In professional matches, ball boys/girls will usually have a spare ball ready at the halfway line for the team kicking off to ensure the game restarts quickly.
  • Practicality: If a player hammers a penalty kick deep into the stands or over a fence, the referee isn't going to wait for a fan to throw it back. They will simply call for a "new" match ball from the sidelines.

3. Match Ball Standards

Teams usually provide a set of identical, pre-approved match balls (often 5 to 10 balls per game). Because every ball in that set is considered "the match ball," switching between them at a natural break in play—like a kickoff—is perfectly legal.

Saw on twitter that the Finn Russell kick off.may have been a punt and.not a drop kick. Something wonky about the video so I don't know if that's true. Anyone have a recording?

There were quite a few other marginal decisions we can moan about (e.g
Was LRZ on the ground). I'd rather be back to moaning about the red  than moaning about another 50 points being put on us!

Ah, what could have been.

Watched the game this afternoon and was very impressed.

A commentator pointed out Wales have just played the best teams in the world. NZ, SA, Eng, Fra.

Pleased to see the Scarlets 10,12,13 carry on their aggressive approach into international rugby. Gutted for Sam.

I have patience with LRZ and think he'll be a brilliant 15 in time. Far better than other options we have. And isn't it great to have Francis back?!?

Understand former Glasgow defence coach Peter Murchie is in line to be Wales’ defence coach following the Six Nations. The 3-cap Scottish international was part of the coaching team that helped Glasgow win the URC in 2024. Has been with Kobe Steelers in Japan for the past year.

Funny right? And back in 2017 we experimented for one match with Owen Williams as a ball playing 12, when the game probably was more primed for it. Then moved to Hadleigh Parkes, who was superb, but more convention for Wales.
