Great question fair doos, not sure if these are sad enough but here goes
bob dylan - billy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjsWrEbgJp4
never had a dream come true-stevie wonder
piano man - billy joel
the highwayman-johnny cash (its sad but uplifting?)
mr bojangles - sammy davis
moon river-andy williams
the ghetto/if i can dream- elvis
who wants to live forever is very sad indeed as is walk like a man by the boss, long and winding road by the beatles, tower of song by leonard cohen,
in fact oasis, the springsteen , the verve , roy orbison, cohen, elvis, all have produced many an anguished tune....you dont know whether to

Never found any Smiths song sad or depressing just sheer, utter brilliance. The one that really gets me, besides the utterly tragic Puff the Magic Dragon, is It Started With a Kiss by Hot Chocolate. Just the despair of loving someone who doesn't even remember you, gets me every time.

Lyrically, quite a sad song, is The Gaslight Anthem - 59 Sound
I wonder which song they're going to play when we go I hope it's something quiet, mannered, peaceful, and slow When we float out into the ether into the everlasting arms I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life Because the chains I've been hearing now for most of my life And the chains I've been hearing for most of my life Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio? Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls? Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over? Did you hear your favorite song one last time? And I wonder were you scared when the metal hit the glass See I was playing a show down the road when your spirit left your body And they told me on the front lawn, I'm sorry I couldn't go But I still know the song and the words and the name and the reasons And I know because we were kids and we used to hang And I know because we were kids and we used to hang Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio? Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls? Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over? Did you hear your favorite song one last time? Young boys . . . young girls Young boys . . . young girls Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday Well they ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio? Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls? Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over? Did you hear your favorite song one last time? Young boys . . . young girls Young boys . . . young girls |

There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths
How Soon is Now - The Smiths. The longer album version rather than the single. Everyday is Like Sunday - Morrissey (living in Morecambe at the time gave it added relevance). Days of Pearly Spencer - David McWilliams (my preferred version but no real issue with Marc Almond's one). Shadowplay - Joy Division |

It's about a Ford's car garage...in a place called Pearly Spencer...it's in Essex.

It's about homelessness or rather how McWilliams viewed the life of a homeless man in his home town.

Eventhough the track is absolutely stunning, i guess some would call it sad!
Cody by Mogwai.
a fantastic track, i know the band is loved by a few on here already, but i recomend the band to all on the forum who have time just to listen to music that will be "new" to their ears.
